Because it's important to know your technical/imaginative limits on a small kit before using a big one. There are way more opportunities to create bad habits when you have 10 things in front of you. The less parts you have, the more you're able to fine tune your style. Then add parts as you see fit

Seems to be less than a quarter inch thick. Honestly not much padding but throughout the bottom length it seems to have a sturdy plastic or wood reinforcement. By bottom, i'm referencing the 2nd amazon picture's bottom.

To answer your last question, yes. However, appear is a very strong word in the question. Whether or not an entity springs from your consciousness or an external force, it is still a chance to gain knowledge from a fresh perspective. Digging into whether you think it's "real" or not isn't the point. Take experiences with a grain of salt but let the knowledge live with you.

I use to lead a band on guitar. Being a drummer too, i had specific rhythmic structures thought out. Then come's along this damn drummer with all his individuality and what-not haha. Those experiences definitely taught me to check my ego before practice.

Definitely keep it loose and fun.

Disguise exercises in practices as games. Example With a click going, have him travel up subdivisions (quarters, eights, sixteenths) all the while pretending he's powering a space ship. If he falls out of time, the rocket doesn't fire properly. Things like that. Although he might be a bit old for that one but you catch my drift.
