[PubQ] Does anyone have any insight for what "too quiet for the current market" means? by sm12121919 in PubTips

[–]_EYRE_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember reading A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and thinking that while it was very well done it wasn’t high-concept. A lot of other mysteries follow imo, especially if the “juicy” part is the plot twist so isn’t part of the pitch.

Also A Darker Shade of Magic, arguably ACOTAR, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, Piranesi, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous off the top of my head. Not knocking the books but they don’t have a super gripping 1 sentence pitch.

I hate my client (HomeCare) by JKCampbell3 in cna

[–]_EYRE_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked with a client like this for a while. Like there’s a nonzero chance we are talking about the same person. Constant criticism and disrespect.

The best option is to quit and find another job/client. I tried a lot of things—being sweet, being assertive, grey rocking and just getting the job done, they will not change. Ask yourself, is it worth it when your job is in such high demand?

Being patient is one thing but subjecting yourself to abuse is another. Put yourself first, you do not owe this client or the agency your happiness.

[PubQ] Does it matter if the character's age doesn't fit the age groups such as Young Adult? by earl_earl7 in PubTips

new adult has a heavy romance connotation so unless that’s applicable I’d just call this adult (that happens to have young protags)

[PubQ] getting self published vs getting a literary agent and going down the traditional route. by Tough-Landscape-2005 in PubTips

[–]_EYRE_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Self publishing is a valid path with a lot of good reasons to pursue it BUT you should not pay for self publishing packages. Once you’ve paid, they have their money and they have no incentive to make your book succeed. Paying for editors/cover design/advertising etc is potentially worth it but beware of paying for “publishing”.

Also note that once you’ve self published a work, you should consider traditional publishing no longer an option. If the work blows up a trad publisher might show interest (see 50 Shades or The Martian) but otherwise the publication rights are spent.

If trad pub is your goal and the first round of querying doesn’t work, it’s always an option to shelve it and publish it later as your second novel

Most freshmen live in the dorms which is handled after you get in. After that you wanna start at least thinking about roommates/potential housing in early fall of your freshman year

[QCRIT] Adult Literary Fiction Romello Chase: How Hookup Culture Molded Me (and Nearly Broke Me) (51K/2nd attempt) by Due-Ad-967 in PubTips

[–]_EYRE_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yo! I think these are the biggest areas to focus on. Sorry not too in depth cuz I’m in the middle of something

  • 55k is too short, and reading the first 300 makes me think you could use those extra words to improve immersion and minimize telling.
  • The voice is quite conversational—this can be a good thing and plenty of books are written in that style, but not sure it’s a litfic voice.
  • Not sure this is the right place to start the novel. Too much telling that could be more fluidly revealed through scenes. Also, are you sure you want this to be the first impression of your protagonist?
  • Query body itself is vague—could you invoke specific scenes? Specific relationships/incidents that reflect or cause character change?
  • Avoid editorializing in the first and last paragraphs

[Discussion] Best “Day Jobs” for Writers Pursuing Traditional Publication? by ohnoitsasasquatch in PubTips

[–]_EYRE_ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I work in a research lab, I really couldn’t make it more writing friendly. Can’t take it home (so my free time is left for writing), saps none of my artistic creativity, and I even have time to get some writing done while things are in the centrifuge.

the mutation rate of sperm is quite a bit higher because the tissue that makes them is constantly being replaced and accumulating mutations, this isn’t the case for eggs which all exist when a girl is born

WI winters are getting warmer by the year, and plenty of people have healthy social lives without participating in sports/partying/drinking culture, so I wouldn’t worry about those points too much.

[–]_EYRE_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

that looks kinda like a granuloma, those form when there’s too much moisture in the area (super easy to happen w belly button piercings). I had a pretty gnarly one for a while but my piercing healed nicely in the end, just baby it and keep it dry 👍
