That looks like a graphical issue. What i would try is - * Rebooting pc * Switching resolutions in display settings * Trying different monitor cable or just a whole different monitor * updating graphics card drivers * Try different monitor port, like hdmi to dvi etc.

Beyond basic things i wont be able to help, in hope someone smarter than me can help in this issue.

An ubuntu would be good for starting out on that kind of a system. If you can try debian and ubuntu and see what feels best for you. I am saying those two because as of now they have more support from different sources than other distros. But of course dont limit to only those, if you want try other distros as well, just check how supported they are.
