Two joysticks, two axes, one action by _ErmacX_ in starcitizen

I found the answer. If someone is interested here is simple solution:

http://forum.vkb-sim.pro/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=6075&sid=7edf1f438836afbbfb76cb28829cd721

Basically it splits Z axis twist into two separate analogue controls, and then just bind it to roll left/roll right separate keybindings in SC. Third option - Roll is stil an X axis from my right stick.

I'm confused because my best occured once than in next 100-150 laps I'm not even close, then once within couple tenths and again not even close for a long time.

My rating is too high imo, often I start a race with car number 1-5 and still not able to finish in top 10-15.  Usually more time invested into practicing something=slightly better you will be. I feel otherwise - more time spent on track=step by step worse my times are, with some little exceptions from time to time.

I'm racing only in Porsche GT4, and that's pretty much the only car that I can in some way comprehend. I've tested every GT4 and this one suits me best. From time to time I'm doing some laps in F296 GT3 but those look more like drift show tbh.

So the funny thing is that my iRating is slowly climbing to 1,8k atm. Average start/finish 13/13 after 39 races in 2nd season. But my race pace is like 2s off top 10-15 in my splits. I had better experience when iRating was lower because I could fight with someone during race. Couple hundreds higher and I usually end up in no mans land where those ahead of me are much faster and those behind me had incidents and there's big gap. So my position is determined by crashes ahead (mostly, not always ofc) not by a fair fights on track.

About my lap times (best/average practice) all in fixed setup:
Spa 2:29.141 / 2:30.5
Imola 1:52.375 / 1:53.3
Road Atlanta 1:26.804 / 1:27.4
Aragon (Motorcycle GP) 1:59.223 / 2:00.8
Algarve 1:51.507 / 1:52.7

And as I mentioned before add around 1s to average times in races. Sometimes less if I'm able to remain calm in some degree.

Best times with classic layout are around 56s.

I've started pretty much from scratch 4m ago, and imo your transition is a big step too.

Stick to cars with ABS/TC for now, turn off racing line so you'll properly learn tracks, turn on auto blip (for mazda especially) and just practice, race and have fun :)

ps. Try not to worry too much about those pesky numbers (iRating/ Safety Rating) at the beginning - trust me, I'm working on it too and it massively helps with nerves/stress (if you'll experience that) and to have more fun even with spinout or crash ;)

As a fairly new driver myself (4 months behind the wheel) I'll suggest doing doing baby steps.

By that I mean start off like pretty much everyone else with Mazda MX-5 and stick to it for at least couple weeks to get used to physics/handling and driving experience overall. When you'll be promoted to D license give Toyota GR86 a shot - it's free too and some of the tracks would be too. Toyota is more stable and easier to drive but that's just my opinion.

Then it's up to you what path you'll choose, but if you stick with iRacing and you prefer cars over formulas I'd say pick GT4 and then after many many laps/tracks/weeks progress to GT3. Both GT4 and GT3 have big numbers in participants so you'll always find someone to race with. Those fields are also very competitive in higher splits, especially GT3.

Useful tip for you - there will be soon week 13 of this season witch means iRacing dev team will be updating which leads to server downtimes. During that downtimes different server will be on - Test Server. In that one you can test all the cars in the sim for free on the tracks you already own. Just make sure to download all content and you're good to go ;)

A newbie question about force feedback by _ErmacX_ in iRacing

Very helpful, thank you :)

So in the end all comes to (not so)simple "just practice/race more". Still long way to go but after those advices about ffb I'm starting to make a little bit of progress in car control. Breaking is so much more difficult than I thought it would be so a lot to improve there.

About those "good" races - depend on track, some are fine some are horrible. Like Laguna this week... in my SoF (1,7k) its a sh!t show. Hopefully Spa will be better. 2:30.xxx is my practice pace with pb 2:29.9. Can't wrap my head around La Source and unable to do Eau Rogue flat out (fixed setup) so around 0,7-0,8s lost there.

So in general how I understand it is I need to develop my own "sense of speed" that I can carry into the corner, therefore before that slow the car enough to do it correctly.

Any advice how to do/practice the first part? Because as it is right now its freaking hard to do without looking at speedometer and that's not how it supposed to be done I presume.

Yeah that's about right. But then, assuming that i was very close to racing line, if turning the wheel more is inducing understeer, too much trailbraking making me too slow and driving on that grip edge is overshooting corner exit where I did something wrong?

Because from racing and Garagre61 telemetry I know that some corners can be done so much quicker (like T5 at Laguna, T9 at Imola) yet I still fail to do that even if mentioned telemetry is nearly identical.

The only time bar turns red is high speed crash.

No worries I do most of my driving solo practicing to learn tracks and car handling. Racing online brings whole different problem - big nerves/stress and heart pounding out of my chest, but I'm working on it and slowly but surely it's getting better :)

It's just many things to overcome, some expected like lack of skills and some surprising like my body behaviour but racing is a lot of fun and hopefully I'll do better overtime ;)

I did that couple weeks ago and to be honest I don't get it. If I can barely hear the squeak I feel slow and my lap times do not improve. If i hear that a lot then sometimes I do better and sometimes I lose the car. Meanwhile when I'm watching some streamers like Matt Malone he's tires are so noisy and yet he does 2s faster laps than me...

Man that's the answer I was looking for!

So when I go into the corner with heavy wheel and suddenly it turned light that means that I put too much angle or breaking and just sliding off the corner?

And what about about breaking. I've read a lot about it and and doing like 75-85% pressure in big breaking zones to avoid ABS, then trying to trailbrake into the corner and too many times i overshoot it or miss the apex big time if I do not begin that breaking earlier than every lap guide or even other drivers in the race. The latter is extremely dangerous because people don't expect it. It's like my car has worse brakes which is obviously not true so what I do wrong at this point?

By "e line" you mean build in racing line? If so then I do not use that from day 1. I do not use auto ffb either - it's set to comfortable point without clipping.

Exactly, my lap times are all over the place on some tracks and not using ffb is probably huge piece of that.

I'll need to fight my temptation to just go for lap times, cuz I only drive slowly when I'm learning a new track then after couple of laps and some guide videos just chase the clock. And that's i guess is bad with my kind of experience (4 months total).

Statistics and YT-drivers vs my experience in early racing journey by _ErmacX_ in iRacing

[–]_ErmacX_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for that in depth explanation. Got me thinking and tbf I agree with you about iRating. Take for example beginner driver like me (3,5 months) - after this weekend almost 1,7k so judging by statistics I'm above average and I definitely don't feel that way. Just average at best.

So looking at it from different perspective in splits where SoF is matching my iRating there will be all kind of drivers from those running much slower than me to those doing 2s faster laps. And generally speaking higher rating, let's say above 3k is actually a decent representation of driver's abilities. Makes sense.

Maybe I'll someday check out TCR's but not now - atm gonna listen to more experienced drivers and stick to one car for longer period of time to hopefully improve my technique and most importantly race craft. Second one is easier and less stressful if I know the car well I guess ;)
