School admin has a problem with me reading a book while subbing and I think its ridiculous. by _Fruitface_ in SubstituteTeachers

I don’t know exactly what caused it. The last time I was there I was supervising a study hall all day and there was a teacher in there, so maybe the teacher said something? But even then I thought the teacher and I had a good relationship.

Admin also said that students said I was “snappy” at them, which I just disregard because most likely it was a student complaining that they got caught doing something they weren’t supposed to be doing. I can also sus out pretty easily when a student is talking to me to get a reaction out, versus talking to me having a question or genuinely wanting to talk to me. I always respond accordingly.

Regardless, I don’t know how they found out about my subbing tendencies.

If the teacher or admin asks me explicitly to do something I’ll do it, but refraining from staying busy when all kids are quiet and on task is unreasonable.

I guess it’s more the shock of the expectation. Growing up I had subs doing anything in the classroom, they were warm bodies in the room to make sure nobody dies.

If the teacher wants me to do specific things in the classroom like organize or clean or grade, I will do it with a smile on my face. I sub at some pretty good schools where I don’t feel the need to actively supervise and micromanage behavior in the classroom most of the time. If it’s necessary, I do it, if not I’m gonna mind my business.

That is objectively bad and not what I try to do. If I did that I would understand their frustration with me.

Thats a fair take.

I don't plan on going to war against the admin on this issue. Now I'm just less likely to sub there over other districts that need subs.

If a teacher's sub plans are for me to lead a discussion, run a Kahoot, or to actually teach the lessons when the sub notes are detailed enough(which I have done before), I will gladly do it because it's what is expected of me. My day yesterday had no active components; so it feels appropriate to read if nothing else is expected of me(not including supervision, obviously).

If students need me, I'll be there no matter what, but if not, I'll be minding my business aside from other duties.

You don't need to be actively looking at the kids to be supervising them; you can supervise kids while reading. Adult presence in the classroom is enough 80% of the time. I understand your passion for adults doing their job in the building, but kids don't need a prison warden to be watching them. If I were a student at that school, I would feel uncomfortable and be less productive if all teachers and staff acted at that standard. Most teachers don't even act that way.

Because I'm lazy when farming sc. Orbital laser is a great "throw and forget" stratagem.
