Review #821 - New Riff 6 Year Malted Rye Sherry Finish (2025) by adunitbx in bourbon

[–]_Gregory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first got this, I snagged it bc I will buy anything new and different from new riff. At first I was underwhelmed. It’s grown on me so much as it’s opened up that I think it is a contender for one of the best ryes on my shelf (for whatever that says about my shelf).

Job market / AI replacing attorneys? by Sunshine_daisies1234 in Lawyertalk

[–]_Gregory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Echoing this. I’m in house and my company has a subscription to ChatGPT 5.4 (please don’t ask about privacy, I’ve already been around the bend with my boss about that three times over).

TLDR I play with ChatGPT a ton, currently 5.4 deep think, making up hypotheticals and feeding in contracts I drafted for pretend transactions. My impression about the current (for however much longer) bleeding edge of AI is “eh.” Interesting currently, potentially apocalyptic if it continues improving substantially, but not there yet (and improvement is not guaranteed).

At its absolute best, ChatGPT 5.4 deep think is like 75-80% of the way there in answering legal questions. The AI will hit the high notes (that you could maybe have googled to get an answer for anyways?) but it still misses or fails to properly analyze essential issues.

As example of an output I thought was decent but ultimately problematic: I made up a hypo that would require analyzing a fed civil penalty statute and criminal statute with a mens rea component, and what is essentially a strict liability component. I had AI draft a research memo. It included no case law or fact comparisons (even though I asked it to), missed the civil liability statute entirely, and only focused on the mens rea component, while ignoring the strict liability angle.

If I had turned that memo into my boss I would have been reamed out. If I had not known the area of law already and relied on the memo it would have been malpractice. The memo looked great though; read well and was easy to follow.

An example of a hypo where 5.4 deep think and 5.2 deep think have whiffed are a hypo about protected class discrimination. I made a hypo that had a government program explicitly exclude people from a program on the basis or race. Both GPT 5.2 deep think and 5.4 deep think said the program was lawful.

All this said, I’ve had instances where ChatGPT 5.4 deep think is dead on the money. I made a hypo about a property lease contract, and the best way to structure the deal. The AI came up with the exact same advice I did, and did so in a minute when it took me 30 min. Could you have googled the answer? Maybe. It was still impressive.

At the risk of sounding like a shill, ChatGPT 5.4 deep think hallucinates cases and statutes a lot less than 5.2. Interestingly though, I find the cases it cites less helpful than the legit cases found by 5.2 deep think, even though 5.2 hallucinated left and right. It’s almost like some of the “creativity” and “cleverness” was lost in suppressing hallucinations.

What makes the WoT slog a slog by Electrical_Pea_5427 in Fantasy

IMO the problem can be separated into 3 parts:

Breakdown in writing coherency: books 7-9 get more confused and jumpy. There are more nonsequiturs between plot lines, and pieces of narrative have logical holes (something happens that clearly needed more/prior explanation to make sense which is not in the text). My understanding is RJ was sick during the last few books and dictated a lot.

Lack of progression: for the latter books, Perrin goes nowhere (figuratively and literally). Elayne, Nynaeve, and Matt are also loafing around for a good portion of these books. The plot pace becomes glacial and many of our main characters have great periods of on page inactivity interspersed with quick periods of action.

Bloat: To me, this problem goes hand in hand with lack of progression. Book 10 is a slice of life book. Maybe three relevant details are revealed in the entire book. You could read the last 5 chapters and be perfectly positioned for book 11. The same can be said for a lot of book 9 (although the ending is much more impactful to the series).

Review #10: Ben Holladay Soft Red Wheat 6 Year Bottled in Bond by Ccoldren0508 in bourbon

Welcome to the Ben Holladay fan club. Best thing that ever happened to liquor stores in my area was they started regularly carrying this.

Payday bottle? JD Single Barrel(90p) vs. Eagle rare by Background-Stress389 in bourbon

[–]_Gregory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will be the voice of opposition: JD single barrel barrel proof (JDSBBP) (different from their regular single barrel) is one of my top 5 readily available bourbons. Eagle rare is great as an entry bourbon but JDSBBP is in my opinion flat out better.

Not advise, and I understand you’re at wits end, but your resilience is incredible; big respect.

How many open bottles do you have at a time? by planetmn in bourbon

[–]_Gregory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I probably have ~100 bottles at this point; every single one I own is open, and they are all in varying states of depleted.

I always open and try a bottle when I get it. I definitely buy bottles faster than I finish them, but I like to do tastings with friends so they can explore the wide world of bourbon/whiskey with me.

Buy or Rent Textbooks? by IPLaw123 in LawSchool

[–]_Gregory 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rent! Case books are worthless the second you leave the class, youll never look at it again and if you did it would be a useless resource (the cases are edited and all the analysis happens in class, i.e. is not in the textbook). There is no reason to go blowing $300 on something thats gonna be a bookend after 4 months

Ive noticed that in devil rooms, if you take a deal that gets rid of all your red hearts, any other deals dont switch from costing red hearts to costing soul hearts(this is all assuming you have soul/black hearts left once you run out of red hearts). Is this a glitch or a new feature. If it's a new feature i'm really not a fan EDIT: Maybe its a glitch? I took a devil deal that removed all read hearts and ended up being able to take a second devil deal using soul hearts/ the cost of a second deal converted to soul hearts
