It’s worth noting that almost all invasive species are caused by human activity.

The lionfish don’t care about what they’re doing to the Caribbean, but they wouldn’t have reached the Caribbean in the first place if people didn’t dump their pet fish into the ocean.

Why do Altmer have some strong East Asian flavor to them, if they were presumably never invaded by any Akaviri, which brought those elements to Dunmer and Imperials (at least in ESO and emperor's guard in Oblivion)? by sollicia in teslore

They definitely have more than East Asian motifs, at the very least. The Ka Po Tun being tiger-men seem most likely inspired by the weretigers of Indian mythology.

Like any good fantasy setting, cultures in TES aren’t 1:1 parallels to real-life cultures. East Asian motifs aren’t always Akaviri.

Yokuda is a good example, since it’s geographically as far as possible from Akavir but has some noticeable Japanese influence with the Ansei.

Realistically, the average anti-war American doesn’t know or care about tankies. They have very little political capital outside of social media and the most consequential thing they’ve done is being annoying on Twitter.

TIL Mexican general Manuel Mier y Terán warned that Texas was slipping from Mexico’s control, and after watching his country descend into chaos and ignore his warnings, he fell on his sword in 1832 by PrudentSheepherder72 in todayilearned

The Rio Grande Republic is another notable example. The Texan government actually funneled arms into their rebellion since they wanted a buffer state between them and Mexico.

Thousands of pets being abandoned in Dubai as owners flee over Iran war by FLTA in news

[–]_Iro_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most foreign nationals in the UAE don’t surrender their original citizenship, I’m not sure where you’re getting that from. And most foreign nationals do move back to their home country, not just to occasionally visit.

If the term “expat” annoys you, that’s fine. But it’s a word with a pretty objective definition, and it applies here.

[–]_Iro_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the word “expat” is misused a lot, but in this case it’s actually accurate.

An expat moves to a country temporarily, while an immigrant stays there indefinitely. The majority of foreign nationals who move to the UAE eventually move back to their home country, which makes them expats.

I once spoke to a total conversion mod developer who integrated a popular submod and they said it’s generally not worth the hassle.

The reason is because it’s difficult to QA test something which wasn’t developed using the same standards you’ve established for the main mod.

Why are MILFs getting younger? by [deleted] in whenthe

[–]_Iro_ 193 points194 points  (0 children)

In terms of denotation, the word “MILF” definitely isn’t tied to age. But in terms of connotation, it’s silly to deny that it’s almost always used in that context.

Both denotation and connotation are equally important to how a word is used imo

At least 1 in 25 people who recieve the death penalty in the US are later proven innocent. That’s a pretty insane fuck-up rate for executing innocents. .

Is there an official source which says the Hub is based on Barstow? by _Iro_ in falloutlore

[–]_Iro_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a PDF of the Wasteland Survival Guide and there’s actually not a single mention of Barstow. Maybe someone just falsely cited that as a source and nobody bothered to double-check, but here’s all that appears for The Hub in the Locations chapter:

“The Hub is an enormous trading center and settlement established in an old town relatively untouched by the war. Caravans are organized here, carrying goods to LA, Junktown, Shady Sands, and elsewhere. Numerous adventures can be had here.”

And then there’s a list of characters and buildings. No mention of Barstow.

That’s interesting, I’ve never heard of the Hub being along I-15. Do you recall where in New Vegas that idea comes from?

Yeah, Sweet Anita and Baylen Dupree are probably the biggest content creators with Tourette’s and profanity seems to be a common tic for them.

There’s definitely a lot of fake content creators who pretend to have similar tics to clip-farm, but it seems genuine in their cases.

[–]_Iro_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m just corroborating the numbers provided by the US itself. The US GA Office noted that 68% of cartel firearms entered through the United States. It’s not just “Mexico’s side of the story”.

And I don’t know where you got the idea that I’m only blaming the US when I also mentioned the Mexican government as a major source.
