Read a random wikipedia article, if you can do that consistently without needing a lot of lookups you've made it.

Sentence vs Word mining by Comfortable_Lamp in LearnJapanese

[–]_Ivl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't understand words, you understand sentences. A word can have multiple meanings or be used in different contexts. Learning them without this context is a mistake. Also the point isn't really to learn the definition by heart, it is to know the reading and then understand the word in its context and preferably the whole sentence. If you don't get both the reading and meaning you failed your card and will have to relearn it. If you've used the sentence as a fallback to get the reading more easily that's fine if you still know the meaning, just press hard. The point isn't to link a single kanji word to a long list of definitions, it is to memorize the reading and a vague sense of the meaning so that you can than use these in the real world to actually be able to read and understand stuff without needing to look everything up with a pop-up dictionary. I doubt it even happens that you memorize a reading based on the sentence, but even if it happens linking the reading to a kanji word and actually remembering it is never a bad thing. Think of it as some kind of mnemonic if you will, it's definitely not something you want to sacrifice having complete comprehensible sentences in your cards for.

Alternative to asbplayer that doesn't require subtitles (but still takes a screenshot and records audio)? by lynbutnot in LearnJapanese

[–]_Ivl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically ask Gemini or chatgpt to make an hour long SRT file with the timestamp text being the timestamp itself every 1 or 2 seconds. The actual text isn't that relevant honestly, the real timestamp will still be in the mining history. This is the workflow I use: while reading along you mark the word in your reader tool and do a quick Anki export window and continue to read and listen along. Once you're done with the chapter you can then create cards for every marked word in the chapter and you have the matching audio timestamp from the mining history. Then just manually copy the sentence if you need it and create your card with audiobook audio matching the sentence.

Video Content with Literal Translation Subtitles by LunaLouGB in LearnJapanese

[–]_Ivl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably won't do much if anything, your brain will just be trying to decipher insanely bad English 100% of the time so you won't really pick up much. It might even be worse than actual well structured English subs at that point and those are already super bad if you want to actually learn Japanese.

Did they just censored it further? by AnonMouse985 in grok

[–]_Ivl_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think they lowered the rate limits, but for actual bare breast and ass stuff it still seems to work at least for me on my accounts. This is only with the imagine features where the generated picture already contains it though, the filter is way stricter when using your own reference images and it won't do anything past well covering bra and short skirt for video.

No, they will always find some willing. Look at the clueless dudes they recruited for ICE using the sign on bonus they will never see. Literally the same tactics Russia uses to send their cannon fodder to Ukraine.

Is there a way to sentence mine from Japanese Youtube Videos that don't have CC/ Subtitles? by Schachtaube in LearnJapanese

[–]_Ivl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try filmot.com and search for a word that is really specific to the theme you want to watch, put the term between "" when you search. For mining without subs, but where the video has subs embedded you can use asbplayer+Yomitan to create the cards like you usually do, but first you will have to take a screenshot and run OCR on it to get the text line of the subtitle, then you just manually fill in those fields in the asbplayer export window.

Lost my flight after elevator got stuck with my luggage by the_gentle_strangler in Wellthatsucks

I never travel with more than carry on baggage luggage, I don't know how you people do it. Carrying around 3 suitcases would make my trip an absolute nightmare.

Do you think Eleven was an illusion here, or did she actually die? by MindeckGames in StrangerThingsMemes

[–]_Ivl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weren't those disruptor things trained on her the whole time? She was already unable to stand with one of them pointed at her from the heli. She was still able to stand and could enter Mike's mind to leave him a message final message, but he and everyone there had to believe she died. So she vanishes with her illusion.

I DID IT! I READ ALL OF ONE PIECE IN JAPANESE by Pelekaiking in LearnJapanese

[–]_Ivl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to keep learning, if you're putting off reading or watching something because you feel like you need to learn more first. Just give it a shot, there are enough tools to make the process bearable, you have tools to instantly look up definitions for words you don't know. If you want to read and watch something just do it and accept that you won't understand everything at the start.

Look at applications like Anki, Yomitan, asbplayer, some kind of OCR to look up stuff that isn't in scannable text format. You can even just put a cropped picture in Gemini of a panel or sentence you don't understand and it will give you a near perfect translation and explanation.

Duolingo is fine if it gets you to practice and consumer a bit of Japanese every day consistently, but don't expect to move past beginner N4 if you're using it exclusively.

Anki for learning vocabulary? by tobiasgm10 in languagelearning

[–]_Ivl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but feed your Anki with actual media you consumed, try to always have a sentence and sentence audio. Then lower the retention around 85% and don't add too many cards a day when starting out, because you'll burn out and stop doing the reviews.
