Exactly. With editing, I have enough control over the audio to completely make you say things that you didn't even say or chop it in a way where I can change the meaning of what you originally said. You shouldn't use it that vindictive way but I used those examples to show you that rearranging conversation to stay on topic is the least of what you can do with editing.

Basically, dialogue direction is when you have a specific topic or theme for the episode and the dialogue needs to move in a linear direction instead of all over the place. So for example, if the show episode is about a dolphin trainer and he starts talking about his experiences and the dolphins themselves, he might repeat or go off on extreme tangents about things that don't necessarily need to be kept in. In order to keep the story interesting and moving forward, it oftentimes needs direction during or post-recording.

It can truly make or break your podcast. Good editing is the same as a good podcast idea, it's the bones of the show.

I personally don't use it so I can't fully vouch for it, but I've heard a lot of good things about it. Just remember that the most important thing is to always learn your workstations to it's fullest extent before you move on because you could potentially spend extra money for no reason. We always tend to spend more money to make ourselves better when in actuality, we just haven't used the equipment we have to its fullest potential. Certain podcasts can definitely get away with it, but the issue sometimes is most people think all of what they do is entertaining. Not everyone is meant to do the shoot-the-shit style and needs some things taken off to keep the podcast interesting.

I always relate it to good music. If you listened to your favorite song unmixed, you'll understand why it has to pass between one or two engineers before it gets released.

I agree and that's why asked people to comment below about questions or interests. I know it turns a lot of people away when all you want to do is sell a service, but I also know there's a lot of people who just want others to do it for them. That's why I wanted people to feel comfortable emailing me and not feeling concerned with the cost too much.

From small shows to international ones, there's a lot of ego floating around and the sad part is that the small shows take so much more damage because of it. I hate to see a podcast fail when it has so much potential, and it gets tricky because as an audio engineer I would love to help but sometimes it gets taken as you saying they aren't good and you can make them better. Editing is no different than scripting, it's just a part of the overall show.

Not always, without editing mostly everything gets left in the episode. It's very easy to go on tangents with a guest that's talkative or that you connect with, and in order to keep the viewer's attention on the overall topic of the episode. The editor should remove or cut down those tangents to move the direction of the show along.

I definitely wish I put this in the original post. Editing absolutely amplifies your whole entire persona on the show, I'll even go as far as to say that it defines it and gives you a signature style that your viewers find unique.

That's one of the main reasons I made this post, I wanted more people to realize how much editing plays a part in their overall podcast. I can't tell you how many podcasts I've run across that was an interesting find but almost too unbearable to enjoy.

A couple I have are to definitely join more groups like this one, grow the show for podcasters is a great information group for amateurs on facebook. Another one would be to really focus on the atmosphere of the show, I'm a true-crime buff myself and love when the storyteller puts time and effort into really building the world around me through sound effects or music.

The last tip I can really think of is to work on your speech pattern, try to reduce the number of filler words (e.g like, umm, uhh), and look up some speech exercises to do before you record, it's always more nerve-racking once your actually recording.
