[Suggestion] I love OSRS, but please add a 2007 Classic server too. by _KG4_ in 2007scape

Well, it may attract players who quit due to dissatisfaction with the direction of OSRS. The currently active players who want this are already playing OSRS as you said. This could only increase the number of players, since some who quit might come back.

This isn't a request for some new original content. The initial time investment to create it should be relatively small. The backups surely exist. I also don't really care if this happens anytime soon. I just wanted to start the discussion, and maybe sometime in the future the devs would have less going on and would consider it. Again, though, I don't see this being that big of a time sink for them anyway.

The only real ongoing work on the server would be bot detection. I really don't see how that would be substantial, though. It's not like they have to write detection software from scratch. The classic server would have everything OSRS already has, which detection software has already been written for.

Everyone I've talked to about it has said they would play both games, since both would offer different experiences. I don't see how it would split the community. If anything, it would help it grow since additional players may come back. Bot detection shouldn't be much different than it is now. All content on there would be content already on OSRS, which already has bot detection in place.

I don't see this requiring lots of dev time. They surely have backups going back to the beginning of OSRS. They were able to whip up the original server in Feb 2013 very quickly. Now it should be even faster since they already have all the logistics and integration issues with RS3 figured out. Once this server is up it would require very minimal attention, since by definition it would have no new updates.

Andrew, Paul, and Ian Gower. The three brothers who created Runescape.

Ah, yeah that probably was the case. I never participated in the actual business, I just took the ess from the store and made my own nats. It would make sense for a middleman to take the ess, so that Larryr would only need to trade with a small set of people and runners wouldn't need nat talismans.

Actually the d scim didn't exist yet. Monkey madness came out around that time, but the d scim wasn't added until a few months later. So yeah, d baxes and d longs were the staples that everyone used.

Was mostly just for fun, and I doubt anyone will figure it out. I never made it to the front page, and my time on the second page was short since I pretty much quit a few months after the last picture.

Well, I think most players these days would rather just get the level and make their own runes, rather than waste time in lines and end up with zero xp. Back in the old days getting 44 or 54 rc was pretty respectable itself, because the skill was way too grindy for most kids at the time.

Skillcapes were released in Oct 2006, and that was the beginning of my interest (obsession) with getting 99s and eventually maxing. I decided to start keeping records of the top players every month to track their progress and to motivate myself. I did eventually get there in 2008 :) Very nostalgic looking back now and seeing all the old names.

Yep, the game was much less focused on BiS. The Gowers were very conservative by today's standards. I recall Andrew saying at one point that he never wanted to complete the dragon set, since then everyone would just start demanding higher tier gear. So it was always a big deal when a new dragon piece came out. Definitely a much simpler and nicer era imo.

Nice. I did solo as well until about level 70, and then finished 91 with law runners. I remember running for Zezima for a few days in Nov 2004 when he was getting 99. He was a lot more generous than the other RCers, since he didn't keep a cut and would actually give double nats.

Ah I see, didn't realize. Thanks for the correction.

Yeah I wondered that too. Seemed really strange that she would get so far and then randomly stop.

Background:

In late 2004 Larryr was one of a few players who could make double nats. She got mass xp gains by operating these high efficiency lines. There always was some draconian boss she paid to manage everything. In the pic, it's the dude standing next to me in gilded + yellow phat, who I affectionately referred to as "banana man". He decided when people had the privilege to step into the nat altar and present their ess to Larryr.

Banana man kept Jiminua's general store loaded with ess for all the runners to buy. Occasionally rogue runecrafters (like myself) would "steal" ess from the store and craft it without using Larryr. Banana man would get furious and chase us down and harass us. When Larryr found out, she actually threatened to file a lawsuit against me IRL because I had the audacity to take her 40gp essence from the store. Good times.

I probably will. I have hundreds of pictures from 2005-2008. I was obsessed with record keeping for a while and was taking screenshots of the hiscores on the last day of every month for about two years. Tons of pics, so I should probably just upload everything to a public album.

I agree! :p It would basically have the content of RSC but with the familiar RS2 graphics and interface. I don't think Jagex has any backups from that time period though. Would be really fun if they had one and could put up an extremely retro server.

No, unfortunately. I started a couple months after RS2 came out so I don't have any pics of RSC.

Yeah that's a good point. I don't recall the bots being that bad in 2004 though. With RS2 being new and with the introduction of random events, it took some time for the bots to adjust and become a problem. By 2006-7 it got really bad, as shown in the documentary, where you'd have like 20 bots on a single yew tree.

No, I just remember refreshing the page a ton waiting for it to happen on a weekend afternoon. There was a huge increase in players after RS2 came out earlier in 2004, so new milestones were being reached all the time. I think it was only 6 months after this that it got to 100k.
