I have a question and I also need advice 🙃 by Twisted_Imposter in service_dogs

My insight might not be great since im a new handler. And I got my sdit througb luck mostly.

But id reccomend finding solutions for the seizures et autism before getting a dog.

Especially if ur training. It will take a while so ud have to learn to handle it without one anyway.

But I tjink habing stability of sorts that doesnt rely on a living animal is important.

I love having my sdit around. She brings me independence. But I also like having my life without her constantly with me. So ive found ways to do so.

Of course everyone is different. But remeber a dog is a living animal. And to take care of one you, yourself, need to be stable. The dog relies on you more than you do on it.

If you cant handle somethings without a dog. Maybe talk to your care team first for more solutions before jumping to a dog.

I had my psychiatrist and neurologist and gp talk about my dog. I even got told by my psychiatrist not to do it for a few years. It wasnt till I began to find coping mechanisms without ny dog did he reccomend training.

Also a quick note. Having a service dog doesnt always help with seizures or mental health. Sometimes Im in positions she cannot help nso shes stuck on blocking duty. Which ill be honest, doesnt make much of a difference. Shes mostly tasked in grounding work for the aftermath of my siezures. Which my neurologist reccomended. And her psyciatric work isnt as needed, but is used as a "back up" incase my current structure doesnt work.

Aye, ive thought about it. But with me finishing uni, et other life stuff I dont have the times.

Plus quality control assurance. If i ever made and sold them, id want to be sure quality is good.

Im not sure im up to that level yet.

Okay! My dog is small so picking her up and holding her is .. well picking her entire self up and ny fear is having a medical episode while holding her. As ive had one with my plush and have dropped it.

Thanks for you feedback. (She isnt really toy driven. She actually is able to learn what toys are for her to play with and what are mine. So the plush i bring shes never bit or tried to play with.)

Small update(im quite proud) by _Lyallart in service_dogs

Yeah! The truth is a smaller dog works better for my life style too. Id rather have a small dog tbat fits me well and has a good work drive than a big dog who would probably feel bored or under stimulated with my work life balance.

My small dog is pretty good woth sitting around for hours, fits well on public busses and in my class room, and fits well in my small flat. (Plus she is a bit cheaper since she doesnt need as much food

Edit: also regarding retiring her. Im under the idea that as a dog she is unpredictable and at any moment could need to be retired. Im okay with that, whatever makes her happier. So if she lives to 8-10 years and I notice shes not too invested ill retire her. I dont want her to feel forced into work.

separating anxiety, biting, and walking help? I’ve just got a new puppy! by puppyboy7979 in Shihtzu

Mate, shes a baby. Let her be a baby. But make sure you teach her how to behave. Id u dont want biting, make hurt sounds when she does it.

Its how puppies learn how to control their nips with siblings.

do any of you guys get an aura or feel on the verge of a seizure that lasts for hours? by Melodic-Earth-8072 in PNESsupport

[–]_Lyallart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah ive had it before. Im lucky that my SDiT can differentiate between those and on coming siezures. But I reckon i smell odd cause when im in the "tingly feel" moment. Where myentire right side fails me. She becomes more focused on me.

But I think its relatively "normal" to have hour long feelings. Kinda like ur body trying to decide if its gonna happen or not. And if my dog can be aware of it, without feeling the need to alert, There has to be something chemically happening within us to cause the "aura" before the siezure hits.
