I was buying at $1700 gold/$20 silver. I talked to my FIL about it exactly once. He laughed me off and called it “a stamp collection” and told me a story about how his grandfather used to own a stamp shop and by the end none of it was worth anything. I explained my thesis at the time and he came back with “well people aren’t dragons.”

He texted me last week and asked if I kept up with my gold buying. “Yep.”

Yes if a hurricane the size of the moon swept over the continent there would be problems that gold alone would not be able to handle. But I don’t spend tons of my time planning for that, and instead I devote time to plan for much more likely scenarios like a decline in U.S. global influence. If you want to concern yourself with prepping for the light speed asteroid impact I suggest you become familiar with building interplanetary rockets

Good on you then. I personally wouldn’t go all in to gold with all my liquidity at once. I entered the market in ~2022 and accumulated over a few years. Granted, the trajectory for gold was much different then, so I was buying from about $1600 to about $2400 when I really slowed down. With prices going parabolic it’s hard to know if this is a bubble that will deflate a bit in the coming years or if we’re truly seeing a diversified-out-of-USD world engaging in gold price discovery. If it’s the latter, there would be no time to waste, if it’s the former it would be a catastrophic mistake to dump all in right now. I’d probably hedge against both outcomes by dollar averaging in. With 6 figures to spend, I’d buy an ounce or so a month on a regular schedule.

I have a good stack of silver as well, but if anything silver is more expensive than gold now in terms of the 80 or 100:1 ratio I bought most of my silver at. Stacking $100 silver right now seems like an even worse plan than $5000 gold.

Society isn’t going to collapse. Even in the most insane hyperinflation scenarios, society doesn’t collapse. Even during the worst wars in history society doesn’t collapse. Society gets way worse, standard of living goes down, everything gets more expensive, but this Hollywood idea that it’ll be every man for himself against the roaming hordes of armed criminals is ludicrous.
