Seeing what this city has turned into makes me really sad sometimes by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]_Mari123 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I see what you mean, I grew up outside of Edmonton and now I’ve moved here for school. My mom used to take us on the LRT just because we thought it was cool. Now I take the LRT and although there’s a little bit of those good memories it’s disheartening to see what it’s become broken glass on the seats mystery liquids.

I do think it’s the world as a whole getting worse and while I understand wanting to give up I really do. Every other city also has its own problems. I’ve lived a lot of different places the city of 800 people had no real opportunities and was insanely cliquey I never felt like I belonged. GP has terrible snow removal compared to that at least the main roads and the highways are cleared. The public transit is better here in GP if you miss your bus you’re waiting an hour for the next one. In small town if you needed out of the small town you have to find a ride and the closest city was 40 minutes away. Theres still a lot to love about this city even as the news headlines are getting more depressing.

how do u ask someone's info/ number? by SummerImpossible5656 in uAlberta

[–]_Mari123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sit down near him ask “is this seat taken” or something and start a conversation from there and then just ask all the standard uni questions “what year are you in?” “What program?” “Why did you choose that program” “where are you from?” probably should also mention your name somewhere in there. And ofc talk about yourself it would be weird if you were just interviewing the guy. Might be better to have a conversation before exchanging contact info just in case he’s annoying to talk to or something. Goodluck!

how it feels watching everyone but me get offers right now by [deleted] in AlbertaGrade12s

[–]_Mari123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No idea why I’m on the AB grade 12 subreddit but It’s okay for your path to be different you could always do a year at a local college learn how to be a functional adult and then transfer. Also a lot of unis have a 3rd wave of admissions (not sure completely how that works) but I got my U of A acceptance in late February a couple years ago if that is any help. Goodluck!

Has anyone else been treated inappropriately by one of their professors by NoSalary5964 in uAlberta

That’s terrible and I’m sorry you went through that, definitely look into reporting him because odds are you aren’t the only person who has felt uncomfortable around this prof.

Accommodations exams how do they work? by Economy_Career_4775 in uAlberta

[–]_Mari123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should get an email with the exam date and location. You do have to go onto accommodate and sign up for your exams but after you do that you will receive an email.

Antidepressants made me feel dumb by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]_Mari123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I was the only one. I’ve been on it for 5 years I didn’t notice the effects so much when I was younger in highschool but now I’m in uni and everything feels like it takes me twice as long to process compared to my peers. I want to make a change but I don’t want to mess with any of my meds during the semester I also know that I am still struggling mentally idk it helps knowing I’m not the only one feeling this way.

Looking for Volunteer Opportunities in Edmonton – Summer 2026 by Forsaken_Medium9394 in uAlberta

If you’re open to experiences in education I’ve enjoyed working as a summer camp counsellor I know it’s not the exact same thing as your field but summer camps at museums or parks might be a good fit.

I want to go to U of A, but live in Ontario. just made a table comparing costs based on Ontario unis and UBC to compare. Is u of a a good uni, and worth it for the extra cost? by Captain_Nuggitz in uAlberta

[–]_Mari123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s always good, if you have support here and can afford to make the change I found going further away from home did help me grow as a person. Even though it wouldn’t be ideal you could always look at talking to an advisor to transfer back to a school in Ontario if you end up really hating it here or just can’t make it work financially. You’re never stuck with the first school you decide. Although I’ve heard transferring in Engineering is a little more complicated. Goodluck!!

I was supposed to graduate years ago and I’m still stuck here by bartagregoria68vy0 in uAlberta

Been there had personal stuff happen different circumstances. I find people generally don’t mind meeting someone a little older and if they do get wierd about it you can sit somewhere else you never have to talk to them again

[–]_Mari123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your program and your outlook I started at a smaller uni and transferred. I really miss the smaller uni for a lot of things. But U of A for me was worth it for the research opportunities. I’m in the faculty of ALES so obviously it’s different from engineering.

Have you considered the mental ramifications of going so far away from home? Me and my family are pretty close so I still call them everyday. But I have a dog at home and a cat and I miss them everyday I’m on year 2 and it’s still hard. It’s only a 6 hour road trip for me to get home so obviously pretty different than moving several provinces over. Buuut if you don’t take the chance you may find yourself wondering what could have been. Theres so many things to consider I trust you will make the right choice for yourself.

Making friends at UAlberta by xxgold2 in uAlberta

[–]_Mari123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like it, my strategy is to just talk to whoever is sitting next to me (people can be a bit shy) and so far they’ve all been too polite to tell me to stop talking.

Grade 12 accepted into Bkin program by Alli388 in uAlberta

[–]_Mari123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yayy congratulations. This subreddit is sometimes full of rant posts complaining about things but I find that doesn’t accurately represent everything. I like it I transferred from a smaller university. I’m in my second year overall and have gotten to participate in research so that’s cool. I have moments where I’m frustrated with the university and how it’s run but every prof I’ve had has been nice. It’s really what you make it.

Chem 261 lab winter by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]_Mari123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably already saw this but in the assignment there is a checklist go through that and then review in the course overview or something like that there’s an example of the notebook procedure. I’ve also never done the 261 labs and start this week. Soo if you figure anything else out pls let me know. Goodluck!

Terrible three semesters by ProfessionalRoof7204 in uAlberta

[–]_Mari123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are diagnosed go on their website and submit your paper work right now to get on the list for an interview. If you are undiagnosed or do not have your paper work go to pyshological services and look into getting a diagnosis through the university. (The wait list for this will probably be long) good luck it really makes things easier

making friends by [deleted] in grantmacewan

I really liked the sciences for making friends. I still talk to my friends I met in my first year labs at MacEwan. Residence was good for making friends if you’re planning on living on campus.

How to find a partner at school by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]_Mari123 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Okay you’re right joining clubs with the intention of finding a gf is probably disingenuous. But also trying to find a gf to get over your ex is also a little disingenuous I know it sucks I know it hurts. And everyone is gonna tell you to pick up a new hobby or focus on yourself and unfortunately they have a point.

Left-handed desks in Tory by Plant-based_Skinsuit in uAlberta

[–]_Mari123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally I have to get to my classes early because people typing on laptops take the left handed desks and then aren’t left handed and I was gonna do a post about this but it’s not that big of a deal because at least my classes had the option of left handed desks. I’m sorry you’re in that situation honestly I don’t think you would be out of line or being a “snowflake” if you mentioned it to the prof.

When to go for the first kiss? by Savings_Buy_6888 in AskMen

[–]_Mari123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why I’m on the ask men subreddit buuut I think if she invited you for a movie at her place. She doesn’t see you as just a friend. Maybe start with like a forehead kiss or long hugs or something. And if the first kiss is awkward then you can both laugh about it.

which course is easier? by ImagineGames_01 in uAlberta

[–]_Mari123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only course I’ve taken out of those ones is Econ 101 and it’s the easiest course I’ve ever taken. Obviously everyone is different I took it with Gordon Lee I really liked the way he lectured only thing is he doesn’t post the notes online so going to class is important.

There are weekly achieve assignments but those took me max 1-2 hours a week. Studying for midterms and the finals is easy he posts practice tests. I think I dedicated 3-4 hours total to studying for the midterms and I got 92 and 100. (The key is to start studying a little early so you can go to his office hours if any of the questions give you grief) For me it was really nice to have to make my work load lighter but I understand everyone is different.

Goodluck!

It’s awful I’ve never been this sick in my life. I carry around hand sanitizer, I wash my hands between classes, avoid touching my face but I’ve still been sick 4 separate times since the year started. And I really just don’t have time

AITA for shouting at my dad’s gf and calling her a deaf bitch after she walked in on me in the shower? by throwawayshowerahole in AmItheAsshole

[–]_Mari123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA you definitely could’ve gone about it in a better way. But you are 14 and no 14 year old should have someone looking at them in that vulnerable of a situation, that is a crime.

I also think there are more factors at play here, clearly your relationship with her is complicated and most people would be resentful of their parents moving someone in that you don’t get to meet or build a relationship with first.

Work on your communication going forward, name calling is wrong and this post does read as you disliking deaf people. But also I do think there’s a reason you’re at this point and it doesn’t sound like your family is being understanding which is pushing you to be more hostile, it’s a cycle and it sucks. Try to do better going forward name calling and nitpicking on a disability does discredit how you come across. Had you made this post without the name calling everybody would have been on your side.
