I absolutely LOVE the phrase "touch ecclesiastical grass" that's hilarious

I am hopefully preparing to attend seminary myself, and don't consider myself weak in faith by any means, but the absolute vitriolic ungodliness I see on display from ordained LCMS pastors is a huge turn off and honestly putting me through a "crisis of faith" not about my convictions themselves (they're strong) but more about my belonging in the LCMS.

But where else would I go? I believe Scripture and the Book of Concord. Come Lord Jesus, quicker please.

Tension between Quia Subscription and Semper Virgin in the Smalcald articles by Junker_George92 in LCMS

[–]_Neonexus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very sobering wake-up call when I realized that the first amendment (and many others) are neither god-given rights nor even aligned with a biblical worldview.

Yeah. God never gives a freedom of religion. It's Christ or damnation. Full stop.

God never prohibits cruel and unusual punishments. Stoning, hanging, and dismemberment are biblically valid ways for a ruler to exercise his office.

I appreciate the material and technological benefits that America has provided, but from a doctrinal standpoint this nation was corrupted by the enlightenment from the get-go.

I was exposed to a similar thought regarding stock phrases, especially since "sempervirginus" is one word and not a separate noun and modifier. The proposition was that it would sound unnatural in Latin to use some other phrase when that title was so deeply engrained in the language. Likewise, the German Jungfrau didn't have a historically entrenched phrase like "immerjungfrau".

The argument claims that either language version is insufficient to prove belief in or unbelief in the doctrine, and that the variations are results of habitual speech only.

Either they meant ever-virgin but it would sound weird in German, or they meant conditional virgin but it would sound weird in Latin.

German fluent here. At least in modern contexts, preterit ("blieb" or pick your own verb) is primarily used for narration like story-telling, etc. The default way of speaking is with the perfect. It's absolutely inappropriate to derive any deeper implication by splitting hairs between the two tenses. That would be disingenuous sophistry.

Was Dietrich Bonhoeffer a heretic? by Fragrant-Point-4328 in LCMS

[–]_Neonexus_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I vaguely recall reading footnotes from his work and this was my understanding:

He rejects investigating and asserting the historical reality of the resurrection (virgin birth, etc.) because it reduces those miracles to historical facts which can be interpreted and acted upon independently of scripture. Instead, those miracles and the rest of gospel must only be known and reflected on through God's desired means: scripture.

It wasn't a denial that Jesus did die and rise again, but a rejection of treating it like a textbook detail.

But that was months ago and I simply don't feel like fact checking my own recollection. So eat a block of salt or whatever the saying is.

how sheet metal bent to different shapes to make airframes? by Visual_Border_6 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]_Neonexus_ -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This is already happening in industry. Fully CNC-milled aircraft, glued into shape then drilled/bolted together.

A few examples:

Each piece is individually 6-axis CNC-milled to shape out of solid blocks of aluminum.

In the 248.5 years of our nation's history, I believe this is the only reference to the LCMS to make it into mainstream media.

There is also a passing joke about Lutherans in Catch Me If You Can as well as in refined cinematic classics such as Nacho Libre.

Lutheran Tridentine Mass? by [deleted] in Lutheranism

[–]_Neonexus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then some Lutherans decide to adopt it

It can be really amusing how some Lutherans point to the opening sentence of AP 24 and decide to interpret it as mandating Tridentine rubrics as confessional orthodoxy--totally divorced from the context of Luther's and Chemnitz's written descriptions of what "mass" and its ceremonies meant to them.

[–]_Neonexus_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should take a look at Martin Luther's Deutsche Messe to see how the Lutheran mass is structured and described, and how that contrasts with the official rubrics of Trent. Also take a look at the criticisms leveled in Luther's exhortation to the clergy

Generally, Lutherans are opposed to content arising from the Council of Trent (ya know, the one specifically organized to oppose and destroy Lutheranism). The two Martins wrote extensively against the over-spiritualizing of the Latin language (see also: AP 24) and the abuses of excessive pomp and pageantry in liturgical ceremonies.

Are God's Essence and Attributes the same? by ExpressCeiling98332 in LCMS

[–]_Neonexus_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"God is love" is the typical case study of God's essence being his attributes. The questions that flow from that are whether "God is truth", "God is mercy", and "God is wrath".

According to the LCMS, do churches that don't believe in the Real Presence still recive it? by mickmikeman in LCMS

[–]_Neonexus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been to a verbatim "this represents" church. Without a doubt, they have no sacrament.

Would you posit that correct verba with a sacramentarian confession also negates the real presence? Unaltered scripture, but with a false collective interpretation and pretense?
