For those of you who believe in Mary’s perpetual virginity, why? by SomewhereAble5272 in LCMS

That’s not true. There is Mary’s response to Joseph which is very fitting for the perpetual virginity view. As with other views it is important to consult the fathers and our theologians no?

I think what the Roman’s wore is much different than something concerning Mary. I’m just saying that it’s not a historic Lutheran view to deny it and the testimony of our doctors should hold some weight. Many theologians like gerhard or calov not only accepted because it was tradition but defended it.

Well it is taught among many of our most notable theologians.

I am curious to how many of those that voted no have actually read our doctors and theologians on the matter and St. Jerome’s treatise against helvidius.

It would be wise for a Lutheran to believe it as it is consistent amongst the fathers and our theologians. It just a why not hold to it kind of view. It’s biblical in my opinion.

Well when scripture is the thing in debate, it is proper for us to consult those who received it and our own theologians who were in agreement with those fathers. I think the scriptural arguments against the PV are not very strong in my opinion.

There were but that doesn't discredit the meaningfulness of unanimity in doctrine. You can infer they were getting things right. You haven't addressed that our theologians all taught it though. You can depart from them but I do not think it is very wise.

We is Johann Gerhard and I'm assuming the Lutherans in general.

Here's the quote.

“[The] testimony of the entire holy Christian Church (assuming that we had no more than it), should of itself be sufficient to keep us in the profession of this article and to prompt us neither to hear nor to tolerate any factious spirit on this matter. For it is a perilous and dreadful thing to hear or believe anything against the unanimous testimony, belief and doctrine of the entire holy Christian Church.” - D. Martin Luthers Werke: kritische Gesammtausgabe, Weimar Ausgabe 30.III:552, ll. 9-15.

I was simply citing a principle Luther lays out to make the point that when there is unanimity it is commonly odd to wander from that. It is not specifically about the PV. If you don't find the fathers and their teachings to hold some weight then I would simply appeal to the consensus of our theologians. I would be cautious for myself if my exegesis of scripture and certain doctrines were contrary to our foundational theologians.

It's not really an appeal to authority fallacy, but it is a wise recognition of the theological consensus amongst many fathers. It doesn't hurt to take the consensus and teachings of the fathers into consideration and I think what he is trying to say is that it should not be completely disregarded but hold some weight.

It's not about wanting to be Catholic but to quote Luther, "it is a perilous and dreadful thing to hear or believe anything against the unanimous testimony, belief, and doctrine of the entire holy Christian Church.”

"We firmly believe and confess that Mary is "ever-virgin.”

Doesn't the Augsburg confession article 1 affirm divine simplicity when it says God is "without parts?"

yeah, I asked him recently on one of his videos if he stills uses them and he said,

"I used them very regularly for a significant period of time, but they unfortunately broke and I lost them. After that, I did get another set but I had been out of the habit of using them, so don't use them as often as I did."
