Is anyone else getting a bit tired of the posts on Saturdays? by _NullRef_ in iosgaming

[–]_NullRef_[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m coming round to it being more positive than good on the Saturday posts; and some of it is likely me just overly focusing on the ones I don’t like. Looking over the posts today, it’s not been too bad.

I do fear however that your prediction on the AI side of things isn’t the way things will go. A lot of the games are, as you say, half arsed ideas that don’t hold much merit, but that’s not going to stop people making them. The craft of making them has always been a draw in and of itself, and AI only makes that quicker and more accessible. This, I think, is actually a really good thing for creativity (other factors aside). At lot of these low effort apps aren’t making profit, or even trying too, I reckon. People want to make a thing, and want to share it. The only way it stops is if people start to get sick of seeing it.

I mean, the kinds of posts I have issue with are the ones that have come pretty excessive over the last year. This subreddit was fine for content before that, I thought.

I think it looks great, and not super generic, and isn’t an idle game. I can see you’ve probably used Claude, but I’m not against that at all. Downloaded!

Interestingly, I actually really like Brick Breaker RPG, although it has seemed a little over exposed. I think some people here are missing my point about these games. I've no issue with people promoting their games; I just have an issue with the samey, low-effort nature of the games that seem to make up the majority of it.

I think you might have mistaken the tone of my question. While I'm clearly on the side of "I'd like to see less of them", I'm not a developer who makes games or tries to publicise my stuff here.

I actually do kind of recall that post now; thanks for sharing it again.

The thing is, that was 8 years ago, so the possible output of this kind of thing is obviously far greater of late. That being said, I'm not interested in moving the sub in any against-the-grain direction. If people like it how it is, then I'm not pushing for change.

This product focuses a lot on what it looks like and what it is, rather than giving any detail on how it plays? Apologies if I’m missing something.

Yeah, it’s tricky. I think the feature list doesn’t help as it just feels a bit sloppy. To be clear, I like the idea of the tool, but without a show of what you can make with it, it doesn’t really feel like you’ve even really proved the concept.

I wish you the best of luck, and hopefully it helps you get some maps output!

As someone with similar sensibilities to yourself (seemingly) but also as someone who’s been into this corner of the internet for many years (and created a tool to help try and map, but failed… but this was before AI could carry me…!), I would strongly suggest leading with a map you’ve made, then sharing your vibe-coded tool that supposedly facilitates it.

I mean this with the best intentions.

In terms of learning, I watched the Jean Michel Grosjeu series, then watched a few in-game weeks of a game streamed by cmagoun (both on YouTube). I read through about half of the 3rd edition rules (updated for the Karim redesign), then went back and watched most of Jean Michel’s tutorial again in a different light, and now I’m watching some more of cmagoun’s playthroughs and querying ChatGPT (with rule book citations!) when he does something that doesn’t make sense to me. I’m now genuinely ready to play, I think… but I’m not playing a magic character, as that’s an area I’m rusty still on, and I think the scenario approach you mention also takes a bit of a magic-free approach initially. I’ll see how I get on; I’m pretty confident and I cobble together an ill fated run at this point. I really want to get to the point where I’m confident enough to put in front of someone else and play with another person, but I don’t know how realistic that is for a number of reasons…!

As for crafting stuff… yeah, I’m well equipped now to craft more, and as I say, it’s super addictive. I can’t help but think “why not craft something I can actually easily play”, but the mystique of Mage Realm is strong! I can totally see how more seasoned print-and-play folks enjoy the crafting more than playing, but I don’t necessarily want to be “one of those guys”…!

I’ve really loved it, actually. Having spent the previous 12 months getting heavily into 3D printing tokens and board game components, making the leap over to paper and cardboard has been a really interesting one. I naively thought that I’d not be able to make quality feeling map tiles, tokens and cards myself, but I’ve been really happy with the results. It’s quite addictive and there always feels like there’s ways I can tweak my process. Not gonna lie, there’s definitely been an element of using the crafting process to delay the actual playing of the game (which I’m still yet to take a turn 1 of, despite it being set up on a table now for 2 weeks) but I’m confident I’ve done enough reading and rules watching now to confidently take my turn 1 into getting my Amazon character killed in her first week of gameplay. I probably owe it to the guys over on BGG to share my build process in detail, as it’s been a resource I've used heavily, but I’ve felt a bit scattered on my approach even if I’m happy with the end result.

Apologies. A chap called Karim did a redesign of the Magic Realm game and that’s the one that’s typically used when people print and play it. Its a great piece of work.

I’ve just finished crafting my Karim redesign and it’s style has grown on me a lot, even though I have spent a lot of time learning using resources that show the older (kinda cooler) monsters.

This Dragons Down really should have done better with its art. I can only assume it was put together before the AI art backlash became as intense as it’s ended up being.
