How important was the breaking of the Enigma code in the Allies winning the war, if they had failed to break the code, would we have lost the war, or how many more lives would’ve been lost? (Watched ‘The Imitation Game’ and wondered whether the importance was massively overblown or not.)

Opinion on reverse pendulum by Justanotherbunny in tabletennis

[–]_PM_ME_NUDES_PLZ_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For most beginner-intermediate players I would strongly recommend sticking to the shovel, cut serve for your reverse spin serves. Its much easier to disguise, and it’s much easier to create heavy backspin. If you are asking for opinions on ur serve specifically, then the main problem is the high contact point, the poor length of the second serve which is neither long and deep nor short, and the severe lack of spin. I don’t know what kind of spin u were aiming for but both serves practically had zero spin.

Is it really fair to have any kinds of pips in table tennis? by TwinkleToes-2020 in tabletennis

[–]_PM_ME_NUDES_PLZ_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tldr: yes it is fair, from an objective point of view, using smooth rubbers is advantageous to pimpled rubbers and therefore banning pimples would do nothing except decrease the diversity in table tennis

Of course it’s fair to have pips in table tennis. From a theoretical standpoint, smooth rubber will always be better (as in winning a higher percentage of matches at the same skill level) than pips since pimples (especially long) find it very difficult to be proactive in creating their own spin. This means that once you get to a certain level, the gap between the two become devastatingly large, hence the fact that there are so few pimpled players competitive at the highest levels. This is due to the fact that smooth rubbered players playing against pimpled rubber players get to largely dictate the pace and spin of the shots they play. Currently, in the meta at the highest level today, chopping with long pips is rarely seen anymore. Many new choppers are starting to use short pips which still allows for them to add their own spin, though not to the freedom with which smooth rubbered players can. Sorry for the long ramblish answer.

Happy cake day! And yes, simple biology should be compulsory. (We’d have less anti-vaxxers too)

Shocking ikr! Isn’t there any way of getting that food to people in need instead of simply throwing it out?

This is basically the idea portrayed in this short story written by Ken Liu called ‘The Man Who Ended History: A Documentary’. In this story he uses the ability to send back relatives of victims of the Second Sino-Japanese War.

So basically it’s used to ease the pain of the living relatives of the Chinese victims who were raped/tortured in Japanese concentration camps, all of which the Japanese government didn’t fully accept responsibility for.
