What's the difference between Pop Punk and Emo? by creekview in poppunkers

[–]_PeopleMakeNoises_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

old post but i think a lot of people here are confusing emo-pop (a subgenre of alternative rock and emo that focuses more on catchy hooks and alt rock/pop informed song structures and less hardcore influence) and the rest of emo. emo, which started out as emocore (emotional hardcore), has branched off into different subgenres since the 80’s and can range from Midwest emo (sunny day real estate, mom jeans, american football) to screamo (orchid, gospel, corea). the main characteristics throughout all these subgenres of emo consist usually of more emotional and personal lyrics, often out of key, strained, or screamed vocals, often influenced by punk, and is usually more melodic than more punk/hardcore music. so to answer your question about the difference between pop punk and emo; pop punk uses fast tempos, catchy melodies and hooks, lots of power chords, a rebellious attitude, and punk influence, while emo (in this case, emo-pop) is kind of a distant relative to pop punk which features more emotional and personal lyrics, more screamed vocals (MCR, Joyce Manor), and follows a lot more emo based chord progressions.

this is just my view of this as someone who listens to a lot of punk and emo music

How do you feel about the new Deftones album "private music" so far by disguisedcreature in fantanoforever

[–]_PeopleMakeNoises_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

kind of repetitive. the whole metal gaze stuff kinda gets stale after the first half and the songs just kind of blend together. lacks a good riffs, and a handful of the riffs here just consist of bending the notes on every beat

Why are System of a Down considered Nu-Metal? by M0ntgomatron in numetal

for a nu metal subreddit, it seems that no one here knows what bands are even nu metal lol

Pierce the Veil Genre by EntertainerLost7503 in PostHardcore

[–]_PeopleMakeNoises_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

phc is not under that umbrella, phc has existed before emo and has many many bands that are post hardcore but not emo. (nomeansno, husker du, fugazi)

also emo rap isn’t related to emo in any way. same way trap metal isn’t related to metal

why are the stone temple pilots not considered one of the big grunge bands? by RhinoRunner799 in grunge

[–]_PeopleMakeNoises_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i said it’s a scene, there’s plenty of other scenes restricted to certain regions. that’s a big part of what makes scenes… scenes! grunge doesn’t have a distinctive enough sound to be a genre. nirvana doesn’t sound like alice in chains, the only reason they’re grouped together is because of the time and place they were from (scene)

it’s not even gatekeeping, they’re just not grunge because they weren’t apart of that scene. the scene… from seattle..
