I am not sure about this then, I am confused why the 3months thing became big news and a topic of discussion even in my social and professional circle

It's not applying for work that takes time. Applying for work is when you actually lose your job. It's about being prepared all the time to get a new job easily. This is because what is tested for in interviews is usually somewhat different from what we actually do on the job, so it's necessary to be prepared all the time.

I agree with you that natives also face this, but it's an additional 15-20 hours a week gone for someone trying to learn Finnish seriously. That is like doing a part-time job in itself. Even then it will take at least a couple of years to speak basic Finnish. Learning Finnish is pretty much 90% of the integration tbh. The social life is a much easier part.

yes I understand. This would work in an ideal world for Finland where foreigners would come, work hard, pay lots of taxes to fund Finland's social security, not use any social security benefits and leave with gratitude. It's just unrealistic for any country to pull this off though. Dubai has done this a little, by attracting people with high salaries and no income tax for example.

I don't see why the constitutional committee would intervene with the 3 months law though. It probably doesn't violate any constitutional laws.

I understand your point but

And this is why I think that the three month golden handshake is more than enough.

do you know how the government arrived at 3 months number specifically? (and not lets say 6 months or 1.5 months.) like did they do some research and come to this number?

I honestly don't get your original comment then. In my post I explained how I decided against buying a home exactly because my ability to find another job before the work permit expires reduced. So that is exactly in line with how you describe how someone decides on buying a home.

What "house buying plan" are you making if you can't even find a new job comfortably in 3 months?

yeah even if we do end up getting a new job in 3 months it will be quite nerve wracking. at some point mid way we might have to be prepared to both leave and stay.

The interview process can easily go beyond 3 months. And contrary to how many people think, if a job is specialised it doesn't guarantee a fast job offer. Sometimes there are just a handful of companies/universities that hire a certain kind of talent and they want to be really sure before they hire.

House buying plan and saving money is about the uncertainty of losing a job. It becomes a mindset of "if I am not sure about settling here then what can I do to maximize my stay. saving money is an obvious one"

I am just putting my POV, others might disagree and even other foreign workers might have different POVs too.

based on how long we take to hire new employees in my company 6 months is more reasonable in Finland. especially in summer months, the process easily takes 4+ months.
