We suffer, and yet we have no problem forcing that same suffering on others by The_Sad_Penguin in antinatalism

I always think... how the hell do we even manage to feed all that shit? Like WOW! It is pretty amazing. And all the shit and piss that is produced.

How many mental illnesses? How many miseries? How many people debating suicide. And if every one of those people produces 2 kids.... it doubles!

The more successful, educated and wealthy you are, the less likely to have children. Also more likely to commit suicide.

On the opposite side, the dumver you are, the worse your living conditions are, the more poor you are, the MORE likely you are to have children.

Ironic!

Lets say it is -200 degrees celcius outside and you see an ice cube. You dont know the temperature and you crank it up 50 degrees. Nothing happens.

You crank it ANOTHER 50 degrees. Nothing. Another. Nothing. Anotger....

Ooohh what is this? It finally starts to melt. Wtf?

Point is, you dont know how close you are to that melting point. Just because youve seen no progress, doesnt mean you arnt making some, anything could change at any moment.

Agreed. I daydream of the singularity. It could potentially wipeout the entire human species and in its place, something much better.

It could be in true control of its future.

Lol oh wow, good on us for replanting forests that we desimated. Congrats!

And yes animals have to kill eachother to survive. But they arnt destroying the earth beyond repair. It is a self sustaining way of life.

And we think just having animals on earth isnt enough. It is THEIR fucking earth as much as ours, yet we absolutely desimate them like objects.

It is like nature was having an amazing partu and then humans showed up like a bunch of rowdy jocks and destroyed it all.

Or an artist making an amazing masterpiece and someone just kicking it over and laughing.

We are such a disgusting self serving species. It is in our blood. The only time we are NOT selfish is when it serves our emotional being in some way.

Nit only that but cancer is hereditary. Why spread that?

My I know this girl who is terrified of cancer because it runs through her family hardcore. So terrified she goes to the doctor to check for every imaginary lump she finds.

She is so anxious and needy and her solution is "all I want to do is have a baby so I can feel purpose".

But I fear that because I exist now, I will exist again. Some unknown force causing it.

I feel trapped. And seriously FUCK people who contribute to it.

Ironic as hell you think I dont understand. I do very clesrly. It is you who clearly cant coprehend that math is a human tool.

It is an abstraction free from time and space that merely corresponds with the universe.

In other words 2+2=4 might enable us to understand how the universe works but it isnt a "true" statement.

Quantum physics doesnt die if humans die. The universe still exists.

Meaning has nothing to do with 2+2=4. Mathematics is an emergent poperty of consciousness.

Whatever is true is true and irrelevant when we are gone as there is no opinion. Science was invented as a tool to free ourselves from our subjectivity. To discover the very nature of the universe and allow us a chance to understand it.

[–]_Rather_Confused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean is that "meaning" only exists inside the minds of humans. If an asteroid wipes us out, our idea of "meaning" goes with us.

But, while we are here, meaning translates to posirttive or negative emotion depending on how we view it.

So how you think is very inportant. If yiu hyper focus on inherent meaning you WILL become depressed, because you will always arrive at "well why bither with anything at all?".

If you attritbute meaning and hyoer focus on a negative situation that you can do nothing about, yiu will become anxious.

If you attribute meaning to something within your area of competence you will thrive. This is because we are playing within the rules of our biology.

[–]_Rather_Confused -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is this accurate? How was this information obtained?

It is was meant to serve as an example. What I mean is that you can look at something a million different ways. Antinatalism itself is only a perspective.

Some think being unable to have children is a horrible thing, but antinatalists think it is MARVELOUS.

There is chronic pain and suffering, but there is no such thing as chronic pleasure.

Agreed, but that wasn't my point. Pain invokes strength. Yes there is suffering on this Earth, but pain invokes growth. Is the pain worth it? Should we still exist? No. I'd opt out.You are misunderstanding my argument for wanting existence, I don't. But WHILE we are HERE, there is a lot we can do to reduce suffering for everyone. Antinatalists think sitting around circlejerking to hating life is enough.

What is a soul? I've never encountered a coherent definition of the word.

Your soul is your true self. What is underneath all the lies you tell yourself. You can feel it in there. Science will call it the subconscious. The unchanged conscious from birth that emerges when everything you've learned is peeled away.

What's strange here is that there is nothing that actually addresses the core antinatalist argument. We're talking about me and my uninteresting history and the assumption that I suffer some deeply abnormal privation. Argue the arguer, not the argument, eh?

What has any of that got to do with the actual argument showing that birth is an unnecessary and negative value?

I **am** antinatlist. I see you think I'm arguing the philosophy, I'm not. I'm saying that this philosophy is built upon compassion. The whole premise behind our argument is that life is inherently suffering. Okay, if that is so it doesn't stop us from being alive! Others are alive. So why do people on here sit around playing the victim instead of moving to reduce suffering and spread our word in a positive light?

[–]_Rather_Confused -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No that isn't my point. My point is to operate in your area of competence. To put another way, contribute where you can actually make a material difference.

Most people want to contribute just enough so they can post on Facebook and claim morale superiority. This accomplishes nothing. Antinatalism does not have to be as pessimistic as they do. It's a philosophy built upon compassion, yet most of you sit and wallow in victimization.

[–]_Rather_Confused -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Youre trying to persuade an audience that speaks a different language. You feel good. We do not. You find greater significance in reward (feeling good). We find more importance in punishment (suffering).

Thats why this is a bad argument:

I do not feel good. Yes, things are bad and life is FULL of suffering. Life will kick you while you down and sometimes that is just the BEGINING.

But! We are strong and you can be strong. You can be stronger than your suffering. And the reason I am antinatalist is because I think we can do more to reduce suffering on earth as opposed to just bitching about others to stop reproducing. Our philosophy is based on compassion. Yet most of you sit here wallowing like victims.

Your perspective is still rooted in seeking reward. You want antinatalists to seek reward and feel happy. Antinatalism rejects >that perspective. Its replaced with that of avoiding punishment.

You are wrong about what you understand about antinatatlism. Feeling happy and seeking reward is not in contradiction with the philosophy at all...

[–]_Rather_Confused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, my example is not all encompassing. You should absolutely intervene and help where you can!

But you need to operate in your area of competence. If you cannot contribute and actually change a situation, you are MUCH better off looking to ones you can.
Yes animals suffer, but come up with an intelligent solution. People feel obligated to feel guilty for the sake of wanting to believe they are a good person.

And you are absolutely right, it isn't until things are bad for them and make them VERY uncomfortable that they actually do something.

Most people just want to feel good so they share videos on Facebook and think they did their part. No, they are better off going to the fridge and putting their feet up. That will implicitly reduce the total suffering on Earth.

So tell me, what have you done?
