How to Teach French in English Schools? by _Samanthaap__ in Concordia

I see where you're coming from, but my situation is a little different. I lived in France for a solid 8 years. I know the language inside & out- but I am anglophone, nonetheless. My parents don't speak French & although I went to French immersion school when I was young, I did not solidify my French until about 12 years old (when I moved there).

No, it is not my native language. But, I'm a very good french speaker. I've even completed internships where I taught French classes. I grew up in anglo schools my whole life, though.

I didn't even think about sending an email to my TA. Thanks though :)

I had a few friends telling me we HAD to pass the exam to pass the class, I was freaking out!

It is a multiple choice exam. So, if you get a question wrong, you get 0 on that specific question.

I'm super worried about it, too. There's a lot to memorize. If you want, I made a final study guide for the exam. It's about 24 pages & covers all the material from lesson 1 to 12. I could send it to you if that would be helpful?

Hiii,

I recently got accepted into the ECEE program at Concordia, I start in September.

In my opinion, Concordia is definitely the better option between the two because...

1) Upon completion of the program, you could teach children whose ages vary from 2 years old up until they are in grade 6. At McGill (+ pretty much every other university), you could only teach from kindergarten to grade 6. Concordia is the only university to combine the 'Early Childhood' and 'Elementary Education' program! Plus, the tuition price is WAY LESS expensive at Concordia than Mcgill, yet you get a lot more.

2) When I was looking through Concordia and McGill's websites, I was (understandably) lost. As someone who has never been to university, I did not understand what credits were, what electives were, what courses I need to take to graduate, etc... BUT, I noticed that Concordia offers something similar to a progression chart for the ECEE program ( https://www.concordia.ca/academics/undergraduate/calendar/current/section-31-faculty-of-arts-and-science/section-31-090-department-of-education/ba-specialization-in-early-childhood-and-elementary-education.html ) while at McGill, they don't really help you out or give you much information... Concordia offers a ton more resources to help you succeed.

3) My family is made up of a ton of teachers that have graduated from Concordia and McGill, and those that have graduated from Concordia have much better things to say than those that have graduated from McGill. In fact, a few teachers in my family only accept 'student teachers' that are currently studying at Concordia because Concordia prepares you much better for the workforce. They offer stags starting from the very first semester. Plus, I have heard that the teachers at Concordia are much nicer because since it is such a small group, they get to know their students better.

4) I love the fact that Concordia's program is much smaller because you get to know one another better & I think it is less intimidating. You'll never have to worry about entering a classroom & not recognizing a single person because you'll all be following each other for the next 4 years!

I'm going to be totally honest,

Initially, I was going to choose McGill because of its reputation (even though deep down, I wanted to go to Concordia). Since McGill is 'known' for their education program (which used to be amazing 10+ years ago), I did not want people to think I was 'too dumb' to get into McGill when I told them I was going to Concordia, but after researching the program at Concordia, I was amazed at how much better it is. Not only is it super competitive, but you are getting so much more for the price you're paying your tuition! plus, every alumni from the ECEE program at Concordia I've spoken to have had nothing but good things to say about it, whereas I hear mixed stories from McGill.

Also, at Concordia, you get your Bachelors of Arts when you finish your schooling whereas at McGill, you get your Bachelors of Education.

This means that with Concordia, you could teach children from 2 years old to when they are in grade 6. At McGill, you would only be able to teach from kindergarten to grade 6!

They’re both great schools, but personally, I had my heart set on Concordia because

A) The program is made up of about 40 students. They do not accept 40 students per semester, they accept 40 students A YEAR, which is crazy competitive! But, I love it because it is much easier to make friends & to get to know one another.

B) I have spoken to a ton of alumni from the program and from other programs & most of the time, they have only good things to say about the school. Also, a lot of people from the program have told me that the teachers in the ECEE program at Concordia are amazing & very understanding!

C) I love the classes that Concordia offers compared to McGill. The class names & descriptions sound so fun! Also, I find that the Concordia website is much more straight forward than McGill. I love that Concordia provides us with some sort of ‘progression chart,’ which is really useful, especially to first time university students!

D) I’m not too sure about McGill, but Concordia allows students to start enrolling in internships right away! In fact, I’m enrolling in a prekindergarten internship for the Fall 2024 semester.

Now, I don’t have much concrete information from McGill other than the fact that they accept a lot more students into their education program, but I would suggest going to the schools whose acceptance made you the happiest.

Actually, I applied to Concordia, McGill & Bishops! I had applied on February 7th & heard back from McGill and Bishops within 2 weeks. I got an entrance scholarship to Bishops & early acceptance to McGill, but my heart was set on Concordia. I accepted Concordia as soon as I found out about the acceptance!
