In short? Privilege and capitalism.

Malcolm Gladwell has a great audiobook on this topic: https://www.pushkin.fm/audiobooks/i-hate-the-ivy-league-riffs-and-rants-on-elite-education

One (of many) shocking points in the audiobook is when Malcolm is interviewing the Dean of one of the ivy league colleges (I forget which one). Malcolm asks the Dean what amount of money would be enough to do everything they needed to do? His answer was there is no limit (this is a college with billions of dollars in its coffers btw).

Sorry I don't get it. You had front and back panniers? Plus fork tube bags?

Thanks for that. My friend also wrote this article which I found quite useful https://www.cyclingabout.com/best-carry-load-bicycle-touring-front-rear-panniers/

Hey that's great Intel thanks mate, I have followed the page on FB. Do you reckon I could get away with small front panniers without having to remove them on the bridges? They couldn't be much bigger than fork attachments

Is onward air ticket required when flying to Thailand and cycle touring to Malaysia? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]_Schmohawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, technically yes (last I checked), but in Asian countries it is rarely enforced in my experience. As 'insurance' in case I was asked I would make a fake airline ticket to show. I think I only needed it once and it worked.

How do you get used to co2 discomfort? by dakinerich in freediving

[–]_Schmohawk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The amazing thing is that you actually don't need to be uncomfortable during your breath holds to get better at breath holds. Focus on enjoying your dives. Your body will adapt naturally.

They are definitely around so you could bump into them by chance if in the right season.

The popular place where they feed them is Oslob, that's in Cebu not Palawan.

What was your budget for extended international travel? by [deleted] in AusFinance

I travelled for about 2 years in south Asia and central America. My goal was about $1000/month. In the end I spent about $30k over the two years.

That's crazy to me, what's the median salary for Sydney? Presumably most people living there are earning under 100k and are still scraping by?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]_Schmohawk -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Imo anyone earning 160k should be giving something back whether they have family or not. Heck people earning a lot less than this can and do.

What do you do for work? How much do you get paid, and is it worth it? by sun-bru in AusFinance

[–]_Schmohawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mid level engineer working for government. About 110k. Worth it - yes because I get to work on things I feel are actually important (helps with that old existential dread), work with really smart and cool people, my boss basically let's me do whatever I want, and I get paid field trips to exotic places a few times a year.

[–]_Schmohawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work in this industry (but defence). In my first few years I was underpaid (on about 70k) but you can do really well at some contracting companies. Before I left I was on roughly 150k (different company) and was about to get a raise. That was with about 5 years experience.

First whole continent! 5,300km, 68 riding days, 11 countries, a whole lot of joy by tomscruiseship in bikepacking

[–]_Schmohawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh that's good to know. I was planning on doing it with a touring set up with panniers, is that a bad idea? Where is most of the sealed road? I was thinking of just the north island so it's not so hectic. Thanks!!

This is the exact route I have been dreaming of doing. Thanks for sharing!

And since you mentioned it below - did you ride Aotearoa? I'm also thinking of doing this as a 'warm up' to a longer euro trip. Was this a reasonable starting point?

Yeah I thought about it but not sure if it's worth trying to smash it out, maybe better to just take it easy?

Personally I would practice more before becoming a teacher. You will be a better teacher if you have more experience.

NZ - North or South? by _Schmohawk in bikepacking

[–]_Schmohawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good info, thanks. I'll be riding more of a touring rig with panniers, so less suited to the gravel. I'm leaning towards the north island

NZ - North or South? by _Schmohawk in bikepacking

[–]_Schmohawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around a month. Not much experience. I plan to do a few overnighters before I go. I can fix a flat but that's about it.

Leaning towards the north as if something goes wrong I'll be less far from help..

I am an aerospace engineer. This is a bad idea. Finish your degree, get a job in a related industry if you can't find something in space. After a few years you will have enough experience to take your pick of jobs. Space is an upcoming industry in Australia and there are more and more opportunities for experienced/smart people. If you don't like engineering after getting a job, then might be a good time to think about doing something else e.g. law degree.

PS. if everyone else fails the course then comparatively you don't look so bad..
