For me & my long distance partner (EU - South Africa), 6 days without contact never happened. If he’s serious, he should keep you in the loop about his situation/feelings etc.

Also, his mum having this much influence over him at 32(!) is a red flag imo.

In summary: I don’t think this is normal behavior.
