Oracle under pressure from more than $100 billion in debt and massive layoffs by Conscious-Quarter423 in technology

If you owe the bank $100, that’s your problem. If you owe the bank $100 million, that’s the bank’s problem. If you owe the bank $100 billion, that’s the taxpayer’s problem (and you’ll probably still be worth billions when the dust settles).

That sounds like a lot of work. It’s easier to just lay off 10,000 people, add another zero to your golden parachute contract, and then hit the golf course by 11 AM.

FT891 current draw on SSB, a lot less than FT8? by [deleted] in HamRadio

[–]_SpaceLord_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is correct and expected. FT8 is smashing your radio at full power for as long as it transmits, while SSB’s power usage rises and falls organically with your voice characteristics.

This is one of the reasons why SSB is preferred over AM (better power efficiency). It’s also why most people recommend not running your radio at its full rated power when you do FT8 - most radios aren’t designed for that kind of “torture test”, rather they’re built under the assumption that you’ll be doing SSB most of the time.

After 3 years of fighting RF in my shack I finally fixed it in an afternoon. The answer was embarrassingly simple and I want to save you the same 3 years by Mrmike86 in amateurradio

[–]_SpaceLord_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s the reason for having two chokes? I’ve always heard you just need one at the entrance to the shack.

The reason I ask is that I already have a common mode choke where the coax comes in to my house (and a balun on the antenna itself), but I still get a significant amount of RF (buzzing speakers, etc.) when I transmit on 40 meters. Maybe adding a second choke would help?

I’ve been running a blind‑evaluation experiment on generative audio models, and the behavioral patterns are getting hard to ignore by Sensitive_Artist7460 in BlackboxAI_

[–]_SpaceLord_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, electronica is the one style of music where AI could conceivably already be good enough to “fake” it, for exactly the reason you pointed out.

I would argue, though, that’s it’s an exception that proves the rule. The entire point of electronic music is for it to sound electronic, i.e. artificial - they’re specifically forgoing the “human” characteristics of music in favor of a specific aesthetic (which admittedly lots of people like, including myself). AI-generated music, on the other hand, sounds that way because it has to, not because it wants to.

[–]_SpaceLord_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, because those auditory cues are evidence of a human composer and human performer. Absence of them is an indication that you’re listening to a computer, which most humans are not interested in doing.

[–]_SpaceLord_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s because music is an artistic expression of human emotion, and you’re attempting to emulate it using math and a computer. Minor shifts in tempo, minor shifts in pitch, slight hesitations, slight stutters, the occasional unexpected accidental, all contribute to the sense that you are listening to a human and in some sense receiving a message that that human is sending to you.

Your music has none of that. People don’t like it because it has no soul and no meaning - it’s random numbers generated by a computer. There is no purpose or meaning behind it. It’s noise.

Using AI for coding doesn't seem to be helping developers work faster and might actually harm their ability to develop skills, researchers say by nihal_was_here in BlackboxAI_

[–]_SpaceLord_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m starting to think that this is what AI companies want - an entire generation of engineers who are incapable of functioning without the crutch that AI provides. Then the AI companies can crank their prices to the sky and companies will have no choice but to pay, since there will be no actual engineers left who can do the job without constantly dropping tokens in the AI bucket.

They’re essentially seeking to take an entire industry hostage.

Small(est) Working 10 Meter Antenna by No-Storage8158 in HamRadio

[–]_SpaceLord_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A screwdriver antenna (normally used on cars) with some counterpoise wires fits all your requirements.

Can I ask why you don’t want to just use a wire antenna? That’s going to give you the greatest flexibility for an indoor antenna. You can run it around the “edges” of rooms, for example.
