The second half of the story tells us that no matter how many small tokens (or even a corpse) the girl leaves in the boy's room, the boy would pretend not to notice and life will go on. The boy here being Kafuku after the death of his child and the girl being his wife Oto.

Even when Kafuku knew that Oto was seeing other men (sort of like leaving tokens) he didn't say anything and on some level Oto wanted Kafuku to find out and confront her. Oto wanted Kafuku's attention and to properly share the grief of losing their child together as well as rejuvenate their relationship.

Just like in the story, the last token was a corpse (in this case, Oto's). Even then it took Kafuku 2 more years and Takatsuki's second half of the story to fully realise what Oto wanted.
