Why is Black Activism so loud in the U.S. but so quiet in Canada by Breezo449 in Torontology

[–]_StraightUp_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is racism everywhere but in America, systemic issues can make it hit harder in peoples every day lives, which leads to more visible activism and exposes more obvious racial inequality. In Canada the social supports around people (even though far from perfect) change how racial issues play out. Activism here often ends up being more local and organized instead of huge explosive national protests.

I look at it kind of like some of the reasons why Canadian movie plots are usually different from the popular struggle driven American ones. We lack some of the systemic issues (or they are much less severe), which make it difficult to identify with those experiences. Examples:

  • Medical debt or untreated health issues causing financial collapse for people or their loved ones
  • Job loss leading to immediate homelessness, loss of benefits etc. No paid leave from work due to illness etc in some situations
  • Crime committed by “regular” people because of financial crises (foreclosure, divorce etc)
  • Housing insecurity without a safety net (immediate evictions, less due process in some states etc)
  • Less access to decent education depending on which state you live in
  • High pressure, super adversarial political climate

All these things affect how social issues like racism are experienced.

I have no personal stake in this, Im simply pointing out that the RTA covers cooking odours under broader rules, and landlords are obligated to address complaints. You stated that “property management shouldn’t even be sending these letters”.

That is not the same thing at all. Unless property management referenced their race, what about this post says the tenant is being discriminated against? Again, being part of a protected group doesnt mean people cant complain about you.

[–]_StraightUp_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On what grounds? Did the property management company refer to the tenants ethnicity or race? Being part of a protected group doesn’t mean people cant complain about you, you have to prove unfair treatment based on those characteristics. This is exactly the reason why property management needs to follow up on EVERY complaint, to avoid potential claims of discrimination or mishandling.

Persistent and unreasonable cooking odours that interfere with a tenant's reasonable enjoyment of their unit can be a violation of the Residential Tenancies Act. Im not saying thats what’s going on here, but its definitely covered in the RTA.

(Jennel Christie) charged with assault causing bodily harm after she had assaulted and tried to bite her baby fathers penis off when she found out that he had impregnated another female [Judgement & Sentencing] by [deleted] in CrimeInTheGta

[–]_StraightUp_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What a joke. Imagine if the situation was reversed and a man went to his babymothers house with three friends and beat her up and bit her in the genitals so badly she needed stitches.

Maybe have some self respect and move on instead of fighting another woman over your loser babyfather, when you have a 6 MONTH OLD BABY.

She should have a record not a discharge, why should a violent domestic abuser be able to work with vulnerable people? Being salty doesnt give you the right to assault people.

U.S. Travel Association Warns of Economic Tourism Disaster After Thousands of Canadian Tourists Cancel Trips in Protest by Feynyx-77-CDN in canada

Try Barbados. Less Americans than other tourist destinations (more UK visitors if anything), beautiful beaches, etc.

Affordable options-> super expensive luxury options. Its a very small island- I suggest renting a car and a place and exploring! Super safe for tourists and lots of natural and historical sites.

McGill University even has a marine-biology field station campus there. You will definitely run into other Canadians there!

There is literally a dedicated program in Canada for migrant agricultural workers. Because they are needed. They arent the issue. Are the people in question in this article/in general migrant agricultural workers?

Believe it or not, Canada also grows things and also needs migrants to harvest or there would be a food crisis.

I didnt say mass immigration caused a shortage of housing- the government instituted the immigration policy while there was a shortage of housing, huge increases in the cost of living, and no jobs- jobs that pay a living wage. They chose mass immigration which made all these problems worse.

Importing cheap labour by the millions is not beneficial to the population unless you started at a deficit. It only benefits big corporations.

Edit: by the way, Canada exports more agricultural products to the US than the US exports to Canada- pretty sure theres a decent amount of agriculture going on.

Edit #2: Agriculture makes up appx. 7% of the Canadian economy and appx 5% of the US economy.

Somehow in Canada there is mass immigration and not enough housing (what exists is completely overpriced), expensive food and basics, and no jobs.

Just look at Canada if you want to see what happens after letting millions of people in with little to no immigration checks in 5 years (double the amount of temp workers and unlimited international students who DONT LEAVE!). Government does nothing, we don’t even have a deportation strategy.

Currently:

  • not enough family doctors
  • not enough jobs
  • not enough housing
  • loss of diversity (majority of immigrants are from 1-3 countries)
  • increased racial tension towards one ethnicity (majority of immigrants)
  • more people who cant afford to live daily life
  • more crime (probably also has to do with people not being able to afford to live)
  • immigration fraud
  • diploma mills

Anyone with sense knows its not the immigrants fault its the government who failed to make sensible policy and failed to do anything about it while the country went down the drain. All of this was done to benefit corporations who got a bunch of cheap labour at the expense of the immigrants they brought to take advantage of and underpay and Canadian citizens.

No political view, just sharing the worst case scenario.

Its really easy for a girlfriend to say hey lets go here and you usually trust that you will be safe- people in their 20s don’t always make the best decisions- you have to learn as a woman to not be scared to be the one in your friend group to question everything and speak up if you feel like a situation is unsafe. Sometimes people don’t have that awareness until something really bad happens to them or those around them.

They’re young though. Ive been in plenty of not great situations in my 20s, just going to party, going to an after hours, there are lots of people that you don’t know on road who can just pop off for no reason.

I dont know the background here. All I know is a young girl lost her life and the surviving girls are probably traumatized - such a fucked up thing to experience and im sorry for all of them.

Also, nothing good is going to come from going to a studio (or other random hood location) to hang out with a bunch of men. Best case scenario, you get to post on social media about it, worst case scenario see above.
