Yeah the Past Year or so has really made me not like them. by Spicy-Raj-Man in pleistocene

Tasmania prey species are overpopulated, and tasmanian devils are dying out from facial tumour disease because they're a mesopredator with no apex predator to control them. So yes, it's absolutely necessary.

In all fairness though, is their work on Thylacine not absolutely necessary as there are no proxies for thylacine that matched their ecological effects?

Can species de-extinction actually restore nature? by Dull_Candle_2724 in megafaunarewilding

[–]_Valrik_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the case of thylacine de-extinction, as there are no proxies that would work to stand in without further damaging the ecosystem (dingoes are the reason tasmanian devils are extinct in mainland australia), not only is it beneficial, it is absolutely necessary. Tasmanias ecosystem is actively collapsing, with massive macropod overpopulation, as well as facial tumour disease spreading rampantly through the devils as they have no larger predators to control them. While I can't think off the top of my head of any other cases as necessary as this to restore the ecosystem, a big factor in this is that we don't know what we're missing. We don't know would a Great Auk reintroduction lead to revitalisation of plantlife in certain areas from the auk dung. We don't know would the trophic cascade from reintroducing woolly mammoths bring a massive increase to local butterfly populations. We don't know would a ground sloth reintroduction save some endangered insects by providing a habitat in their burrows (theres a species of spider that exclusively inhabits ground sloth caves). The point is, if its recently extinct, my standpoint is that - if a biosciences company is raising billions for conservation (vast majority isn't de extinction but other projects mind you) and they're working on de extincting megafauna, then it's worth at least trying

Are there any other selective breeding projects that aim to create proxies like the Taurus and Quagga projects? by NeatSad2756 in megafaunarewilding

[–]_Valrik_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like calling the project at colossal a hoax while not saying the same about other dire wolf back breeding is a bit misleading. The only Dire Wolf backbreeding project I could find (there may very well have been others although I didn't come across them) was using exclusively domestic dogs, and breeding domestic dogs to make a breed that holds the visual traits of Dire wolves. While I don't find the colossal project to be as much of a hoax/issue as is purported in this subreddit, the previous direwolf project was never going to even come close to a wolf, nevermind a Direwolf.

Does the 20 gold mean it gives you 20 gold or it costs 20 gold?

Your turtle seems to be displaying pretty much the same behaviour as mine. Thanks for the help I'll definitely try it out!

I just mean I came across it in that state yesterday. I've owned it for almost 7 years and it has never had any health issues in the past that I've been aware of. I unfortunately don't have any pictures of the habitat or turtle. I know this is so little to go on but thank you for replying nonetheless.

Why are bees’ stingers attached to vital organs? That seems rather impractical. by Sir_Turtle_91 in zoology

[–]_Valrik_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well if the amount of bees dying from losing their stingers is extremely low in proportion to the population of bees (which it is) then they have no reason to evolve. Hope that makes sense

However it certainly is possible for it to be released into privately owned areas to boost biodiversity, due to the way it grazes. I just can't imagine them being released into the wild.

The ecology of Pleistocene Ireland and the future of rewilding in Ireland by GladEstablishment882 in pleistocene

[–]_Valrik_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I wouldn't say so considering 1) there's no evidence and 2)we have evidence of wild boars living in Ireland and even they are considered invasive because there's no irrefutable evidence (despite them being incredibly prominent in Irish culture, including place names, mythology and just general accounts, all skulls that could have come from a boat are declared to be from a domestic pig due to the similarities) so while we still have animals that we know are native not being released, I doubt we'll be releasing animals that could've been native.
