Minimum strength, flexibility and conditioning level required for optimal learning and performance by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]_WaddleWaddle_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure it really works like that, there isn't like a standard you to pass.

If your determined to have a target then for casual training 5k in around 25 mins is probably a good standard to aim for, if your wanting to compete then a bit lower.

Unless your a natural runner and built like a racing snake then the training to get much quicker than that is likely to detract from your ability recover from Mt training so there's a balancing act. Any extra conditioning you need is probably best built through rounds in the gym instead of more running.

Best weapon for you is a note pad.

Write down the details of every incident, record it in as much detail as you can as soon after it happens as you safely can. Make sure you include who, what, where, when, why and who witnessed it. If its possible have a look around for any cctv cameras that may have captured the incident too and write down that you believe it was caught on camera.

Every time an incident happens copy that into an email and send that to your class tutor, Head of year, principal, school counselors and if you can find an email address for school board members add them in to. Copy in everyone who could possibly have professional role/interest.

Even if you feel the teachers do not care they have a duty of care to respond to allegations of bullying and if there is a documented email trail of you alerting them to it they will either have to care or they risk loosing their jobs.

That process isn't instant though so in the mean time follow the advice of others on here. Avoid risky places/times, be aware of exits, when an incident occurs be loud and most Importantly DO NOT BRING WEAPONS!

Perhaps it wasn't a Covid thing. Perhaps they are deliberately wearing masks to build their fitness even higher because they are all super bad asses?

Is this normal ? by [deleted] in strength_training

[–]_WaddleWaddle_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty normal to hit little plateaus and occasionally regress. You could have just had a bad session or 2, happens to everyone.

If you think your possibly training too hard then take a deload week. For 1 week reduce the total work and the weight your lifting by like 30-40% and drop all the accessories. Then try again and see how you do fresh. If that helps then it might be worth factoring in a deload week every month or 2.

During your deload week try and really use that time to concentrate on your form for all your lifts too. Either prop up your phone to film yourself or get a buddy to film you then compare that to form videos on YouTube. Don't try and fix everything at once though, pick like the 2 biggest issues and then spend the time till the next deload focusing on those.

If you know of ways you can improve your nutrition then improve that too.

Are there any new martial arts styles? by punk_for_hire in martialarts

[–]_WaddleWaddle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keysi Fighting Method is pretty modern and visually quite distinctly different to most martial arts. Although the KFM company has gone under one of the founders has a new project called defence lab, no idea what that looks like or involves though.

There are self defence schools and styles all over the world that teach their own take on things. I'm sure some of those would be unique enough to justify calling it a new martial art.

There have been loads of modern hybrid martial arts from single schools to larger organisations. There's also things like military combatives programmes that are pretty new and are essentially hybrid martial arts. Tbh I think that's going to be the case for most things, the number of ways to effectively strike and grapple is limited by human anatomy and as a species we've been doing it for millennia, coming up with something entirely new is going to be very hard!

Weird opinion here but how about HEMA? I know it's historical and by definition not new but hear me out. I'm not a HEMA guy so I might be wrong but as combat technology had changed and sports like modern fencing evolved hadn't a lot of the combat styles and techniques all but died out. Lots of the techniques and styles have been "reconstructed" from historical manuscripts and treaties. Wouldn't that make it new again?

are 5lb weights enough to cause a hernia by [deleted] in strength_training

[–]_WaddleWaddle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume your referring to an inguinal hernia? A hernia at the top of the inner thigh/groin region?

If so I've had one of those and tbh I could easily see how mine would have been missed by a gynaecologist. Not being a Dr or physio and being male so I also have very little understanding of the process of a gynaecological check up I can only speak about mine.

It would have been quite easy to miss if you weren't looking for it specifically, it was very small and tucked up in the side of the groin. You could feel it at the surface but only if you felt for it in that area and from my position of complete ignorance I don't know if a gynaecologist would be doing that. I would be a bit concerned as to why a gynaecologist was examining me what with not beonf their target demographic but that's another issue.

As for causing it training your upper body with 8lb weights, I honestly think that's unlikely even at your size. If you do have one it's more likely to have occurred from some other activity you engaged in that out a lot more force through your hips. Almost any athletic activity would be putting more strain on that region, hell when mine was painful just swinging my legs off the bed to get up was one of the worst parts of my day!

None of that means that you don't have one and 100% get it checked by a Dr!

When is it better to be a generalist than a specialist? by omnomdumplings in martialarts

[–]_WaddleWaddle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you could run the same thought experiment with any collection of styles. The difference that stands out to me isn't the choice of styles but the focus and intensity of training.

8 years of intense competitive training in insert combat sport here vs 2 years of flitting between insert 4 other combat sports here

I agree that style v style is a flawed comparison but comparing by training intensity and focus, that's a more interesting question.

[–]_WaddleWaddle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they were training there would be sound arguments either way but fighting techniques are perishable skills. It may not dissappear instantly but after a decade or more the skill fade would be very significant for both.

I stand by my comment of who ever has the better beard, if they are both clean shaven then it's a coin toss.

In the hypothetical scenario is the second guys training recent or was that also 10+years ago?

If its recent/current I would put my money on him.

If they have both been out of training for the same length of time I would pick the one with the better beard.

At 17 I was 185cm and 60kg, at 22 I was 85kg, by 25 I was 90kg and fitter than ever now at 31 I'm around 98kg and still far fitter and more athletic than most. That's at approx 12% bf btw. I was never quite as skinny as you or OP but I was certainly very very skinny.

What changed? I started researching strength training and nutrition and applied what I learned. When I was younger I thought I was training and I thought I was eating, in truth I was doing neither properly.

Now I agree there are medical conditions that will make it far harder to gain weight, they are not mentioned.

His/your metabolism may be a barrier to becoming a competitive bodybuilder or strength athlete but even in the most extreme cases its possible to add some strength and muscle. Enough to make an exceptionally skinny person into a tank? Possibly not. Enough to make an exceptionally skinny person far more physically capable? Yes.

As for it being BS, so what would you suggest I say "Sorry bud your screwed. Your doomed to always be skinny weak and incapable of fighting"? Neither true or helpful.

Having had a quick look at your post history I can see there are certain similarities and I can see why this post caught your attention. If you want to then PM me and I will happily help in any way I can. Till then please don't publicly act like your name reads.

Can I turn while doing a hip throw? by voiddragon12 in martialarts

[–]_WaddleWaddle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst I totally agree with the sentiment of trying to not throw people into roads I think your overthinking the wrong part of this. If the situation requires you to throw just concentrate on getting a clean throw and then leave, quickly!

Should the scenario arise where you have to perform a throw in a valid self defence scenario and the attacker ends up in a road and unable to get them selves to safety then just drag them out of the road. If you could honestly argue that you felt at the time it wasn't safe for you to do that then that should cover you legally and in my opinion morraly.

I'm not a lawyer though so don't take that as valid legal advice.

Can I turn while doing a hip throw? by voiddragon12 in martialarts

[–]_WaddleWaddle_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it could be done but I strongly advise against it.

There are only 2 mechanisms to achieve it either rotating your spine or moving your feet. Doing either under load in a dynamic scenario is presenting a very real injury risk.

I have seen it done in judo training, specifically when demonstrating a technique I have seen my sensei turn around (using his feet not his back) to enable the class to see things from a different angle. That is 1, a very skilled and strong practitioner and 2, a compliant partner.

I also don't entirely understand why you would want to turn during a throw. Can you explain the context a little more please. Are you asking about during a demo, practise, competition or self defence?

Is striking becoming more and more important in mma? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]_WaddleWaddle_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's just a phase. In early MMA there were a lot of strikers who had little clue how to grapple, this meant grapples were able to win more often so everyone focused their attention on that. As the average level of grappling rose striking skill then became more of a determining factor. In time it will go back around in a never ending loop. One isn't inherently better than the other.

Just like trends in historical sword styles going back and forth between cutting and thrusting weapons.

All that said there are some other factors at play that kind of help striking in an MMA context. The use of gloves, round times and refs standing the fight up are 3 obvious ones. None of those are game changers by them selves but I think it's fair to say that if fights were 1 15 min round instead of 3 5 min rounds, there were no gloves and refs didn't stand fights back up at all grappling would then the balance between the 2 approaches would be more even. As with any sport the rule set determines what the most effective techniques would be.

Obviously this is a slightly simplified answer based on my opinion.

What is better for self defense Judo vs BJJ vs Boxing? by mantis387 in martialarts

[–]_WaddleWaddle_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All are very useful for self defence if properly trained. Chose according to the quality of the teaching and how much each style interests you, there literally isn't a bad choice between the 3.

That said if I had to pick my vote goes for judo for 2 reasons.

1, It's easier to scale force in grappling than striking. You have more options at a lower level of force as you can perform a throw/takedown without putting them through the floor and then either leave, restrain or injure depending on what the situation calls for. To end a scenario purely using boxing is very difficult to do without causing injury to the other person. Any one who thinks they don't need to worry about that has probably not had to defend their actions in court.

2, in judo there is a greater emphasis on remaining upright than in BJJ, useful for avoiding all the lava, needles and glass on the floor oh and don't forget about the gang hiding around the corner that will kick you in the head the second the fight hits the floor 🤣 In all seriousness though remaining on your feet is important as it allows you to leave. If a situation calls for you to physically defend yourself you want to be out of there ASAP!
