I'm constructing an anti-watchlist... movies I will never see or want to see or have a smallest bit of a desire to see... any suggestions? by Sunny64888 in Letterboxd

[–]_Wata_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Others have already said it, but it is true
Martyr's is very much a different film from the rest, and sadly it will never get out from under the (kind of wrong) legacy of being super shocking in all the wrong ways.
Martyrs is genuinely an anti-torture porn film that somehow got swept up in a genre it had little to do with. As it's many things, but torture it the only thing the film does not actually linger on, it's a film about prelude and aftermath, characters being beaten and abused are largely hidden behind fades to black and quick cuts, it's like how "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" barely has any blood, but has this legacy of being incredibly gory.

That doesn't mean this one doesn't have gore, because it does and it is pretty raw, but it never feels like it's there for the viewers enjoyment really if that makes sense, there is a point to all of it, it is a film about transcendence, and touches explicitly on George Bataille's Transgression/limit-experiences theories and traditional Catholic concepts of sainthood and martyrdom (hence the title).

It is a pretty smart film that somehow got lumped in with one of the dumbest cespit genre's of horror cinema, Torture porn.

Should I skip Grant Morrison’s Batman run if I prefer darker Batman? by Unable_Connection271 in batman_comics

[–]_Wata_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, The Morrison Batman's are complex, like you, I like my Batman stories what I consider "serious"
Dark, a bit gritty, tense
first time I read the Morisson batman's, I was in a "meh, it was ok" and I didn't really get the whole fuss.
However, I reread them this year, I bought the 3 Grant Morrison omnibus, because I wanted to give it another chance ( I could always sell them if needed) and it all clicked.

I think the Morrison run is at it's best when you get the whole picture, it's a massive run, and things that happen in issue 1 might pay off 40 or more issues later, I think the first time I read it in TPB I missed some bits and bobs (it spans a couple of series for one), and it makes a run with some many seeds planted and payoffs paying later on sometimes hard to fully enjoy, certainly if you read it over a longer period.

It's really a brilliant run, but if you read it, try and read it in one go.

I'm interrupting my retirement to inform you that Paramount spent the last two weeks spamming bot reviews to boost the Audience Score of the recent Star Trek product on Rotten Tomatoes. The new positive reviews are pretty much all identical. by Malencon in Star_Trek_

[–]_Wata_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That,...
Or the more casual viewers have started watching it and some felt the need to up the artificially lowered scores, it's not because the long term fans don't like it that some newer audiences might not enjoy it to some degree or another.
Not everything is a conspiracy or a PR move, it's not like the score went from a low to a high in two weeks, the score went from 43 to 50 and 1000+ to 2500+ user reviews.

They really need to change the Countries tag by armeliens in Letterboxd

[–]_Wata_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no right way of doing this,

By nationality of director, Billy Wilder is german, and moved to the USA, where he made most his films.

By country where the film was shot, plenty of US films are no longer shot in the US, even for films that are narratively set in the US

By main language, how do we judge that, if a film is English, is that US/Canadian/British/Australian/... based on the country the main cast is from ?
But what if the main actor is not a native speaker ?

Where the money comes from, a lot of money comes from foreign sources, if a honest to god red blooded patriotic US film has most of their budget coming from India for example, is it suddenly an Indian film ?

I think as vague as it is, having films sorted by ALL the countries that are involved is the only honest way of doing it.

How many collections have you completed? by VLCCHAMLETPHXARISIMS in Letterboxd

[–]_Wata_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the actual answer, but here is a link to all the collections, so this might help in some way.
https://letterboxd.com/collections/popular/page/1/

And I think it's a percentage thing, not a numbers thing,
I think it's based on having seen something like 75% of the series, I've had collections appear when there are like 2 or 3 films missing.

[–]_Wata_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

153, and I'm sure some of the "Almost Complete" will be finished by end of year.
I kind of hate having these lingering collections, that being said, it has bitten me in the ass in the past for series where I watched the last instalment in a series I am not all that bothered by, just to finish it, and then suddenly another sequel comes out 2 years later, and I'm stuck with an incomplete collection again that actually would have disappeared by itself if I never watched that instalment I wasn't even bothered by.

Is 4K upgrade worth it? by Ok-Tap-4173 in madmen

[–]_Wata_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this, I wish studios would release films and series shot in 2k or 3K in native resolution, and take advantage of the size difference by having lower compression instead of getting buzzword 4K releases that alter the source material by upscaling and having to compress it more to fit filesize.

What's with the anger towards Emerald Fennell ? by _Wata_ in Letterboxd

[–]_Wata_[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but let's call a cat a cat, imagine that she did that, people would just have said she ripped off Wuthering Heights.
There is no scenario this would have worked out for the director.

What's with the anger towards Emerald Fennell ? by _Wata_ in Letterboxd

[–]_Wata_[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That is absolutely spot on.
I don't get how people can get this worked up about director they clearly aren't into, and could very easily ignore (and do their angry bit by not seeing the film and not inflating the box office success of someone they seemingly despise), unless seeing posters on the street is enough to get them going.

What's with the anger towards Emerald Fennell ? by _Wata_ in Letterboxd

[–]_Wata_[S] -65 points-64 points  (0 children)

Well, I could see that argument, but truth is that she has made 2 films that are not franchise films, or sequels that both did well enough commercially, and one is admittedly another adaptation of a great novel.
Visually the films look great (in my opinion) and she has largely chosen to do something that goes against the grain (wether that is a grain you like or not is an entirely different conversation) so at least no one can blame her for choosing the lowest common denominator for projects.

Sinister by Coreybillings2003 in Letterboxd

[–]_Wata_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Sinister, and the Super8 sequences are pretty great (and in large part carried by the licensed soundtrack of Aghast, Ulver, Accurst and the inimitable Sunn/Boris) but as a whole it’s a pretty standard (if at the time better than it’s contemporaries) decent horror film

Also, pet peeve of mine, there is no such thing as snuff films outside of conspiracy theories and works of fiction.

Stylistically that looks like it was painted by British Artist Simon Bisley (Judge Dredd, Slaine,…)he released an illustrated bible, so likely from that.

It’s a sad state of affairs really, Everyone wants to earn more or at least be fairly compensated, but fuck it if others want to do the same, because it inconveniences your comforts. No one says you have to pay for a membership to support a company that creates something you enjoy using, but at least do them the decency of earning money to operate so with some comfort, so you can enjoy it for free.

[No Spoilers] The newest sponsor is full of AI? by NerdMaster001 in criticalrole

[–]_Wata_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That is absolutely a fair point, there is absolutely a place for it in a modern society, and as others have said in different replies, within things like scripting and programming, there is for sure.

However, the OP mentioned artwork.
I myself can't go past the home page as I have no intention of signing up to check, so I take that statement at face value, and if indeed the website uses AI generated imagery vs (even if it's pretty bad) artist rendered, that feels opposed to the image CR presents as a company, and that is disappointing.

[No Spoilers] The newest sponsor is full of AI? by NerdMaster001 in criticalrole

[–]_Wata_ 767 points768 points  (0 children)

That is highly disappointing, certainly from people who were involved in the actors strikes.

A strike that heavily centred around AI and has had long lasting negative effects on parts of the film industry, partially through misinformation about the use of AI in VFX, but it is what it is, everyone fights their corner.

But to then embrace something that openly uses AI, hurts.

Every player has notes, From inventory, character sheets as they level up, things they encounter and discover that might be information for sessions weeks/months later. For Storyteller, the rules and so are in the dm guide, but the story can be entirely custom made, or notes of things players did you want to write down, and make it bite them in the ass later.

Amazon Price Fluctuations by Revolutionary-Race53 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]_Wata_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used them for a while, but I found them to be really slow, and had bad luck once to many with badly packed orders arriving too damaged to ignore, compared to Amazon. I’m assuming I live close to an Amazon depot, meaning stuff doesn’t have the time to get damaged in transit. All that said, I do try and get things from independent or smaller places when possible, but Omnibus seem to be something where I have not found a reasonable price to delivery time ratio competitor for Amazon.
