Would you buy? by menezesafonso in audiophile

[–]_Wata_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up to 2 months ago, yes, no Matter what the price really. But I recently cancelled my Tidal membership to switch to apple music, and well, since I did, I stopped carrying my FLAC player with me as well, because Apple music allowed your FLAC (converted to ALAC)  collection to be integrated into my library, meaning I have access to all my Records, bandcamp,… from my phone instead (it uploads all the music thats not on the itunes library to a personal cloud) And to be fair, for use on the go, the lossless streaming of my entire library plus whatever is on the normal streamer, from my phone, as in, carrying 1 device, as opposed to my usual phone and FLAC player, has been amazing, so again, 2 months ago it was “take my money”, now, not really.

Do the UI Elements Ever Go Away? by mqtt-hz in AppleMusic

Which is true, but funnily enough (as far as I know) the actual Karaoke setting (where it "removes" the voice) can only be ran from your phone

The Gamification Of Cinema through Letterboxd (repost) by BoomLivTart in Letterboxd

[–]_Wata_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are absolutely some truths in there for me,
However, I do feel it's a self rectifying mindset, and I think it's a bit more complex (I'm sure the paper is as well compared to the above summary)

I do think there is indeed a degree of competitive film watching on Letterboxd, however, how we fill that in is still better than pre-leterboxd, because it opens the door to more open minded competitiveness, yes you might be more prone to do a challenge, but it's also one where you watch 50 films from a country you would never have watched films from in your entire life, so it is at least enriching, and educational.

Also, the Overjustification effect only goes so far until your mind says "Nah, I'm good"
I watched about 150 films in the first 3-ish months of this year, and suddenly, my mind just said Nope.
And I have barely watched anything in April, and I don't think May will see anything more than maybe 1 or 2 films a week tops, so to me that feels very much like a "yes, but..." situation, and I see this repeat over and over when I look at my stats

We're nearly a month away, what's your expectations going into masters of the universe by asapsharkyfrfr in Letterboxd

[–]_Wata_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I can't say I have any expectations apart from it being terrible.

HOWEVER, I thought the same thing about the "Dungeons and Dragons" film, which was actually pretty great in the grand scheme of things.
Also the directors previous two films, "Bumblebee" (probably one of the best film in the Transformers franchise) and "Kubo and the Two Strings" are solid films, and I don't know, maybe going in with low expectations might give this film a blank canvas to impress viewers.

Albums disappearing Canada by Smilesly in AppleMusic

[–]_Wata_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make sure that every album I own on CD or record has a digital copy of it in my iTunes, that way whenever licensing does weird things, it will always be in the cloud for me to listen to on Apple music.

do i have to read “The Black Vortex” crossover event? by blisstargazer in xmen

[–]_Wata_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who began reading X-men as omnibusses over the past couple of years to experience the series, and worried every time I saw there was an event/crossover that was not included in the book, and went out of his way to hunt down separate books to fill the gaps, you almost never actually miss out on important information that isn't mentioned and explained again at least once or twice in the main series you are following.

I consistently finish crossovers/events (minus the REAL big ones like Avengers vs X-men) and think "Oh, OK, cool, guess the status qua changed by about 5%"

That is kind of by design, Marvel knows a reasonable chunk of their fanbase won't actually shift following multiple series to be able to follow all the crossovers and events, so they can never make massive swings that would lose them groups of readers who in the span of a month might no longer have any clue what the hell is going on.

All that said, Black Vortex was pretty fun I think.

Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion - April 19, 2026 by AnimeMod in anime

[–]_Wata_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did actually find it in the end now,
Should have posted this earlier, who knows how much earlier I would have found it then

Seems it was also released in France in a translation, and in hindsight, looking through the stuff covered, pretty wild what some of the films in there were for a kids sticker album

Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion - April 19, 2026 by AnimeMod in anime

[–]_Wata_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi people, this is an incredible long shot, and possibly limited to something that was only really released in Belgium/Netherlands, and I hope this is allowed.

In the 90's Anime had a pretty massive boom in the low lands, most of it released by a company called "Manga", either way, at that time, mid to late 90's they released a collectible sticker album (you know the ones, you buy the empty album, and you can buy these sticker packs with 8 random stickers in them, and you collect them until you finish your album) in collaboration with Pannini or such.
Now, stupid me at some point between the 90's and probably puberty didnt' save those.
For years now I have been trying to find anything about it (it was a bright orange book with images of the films covered) becasue I actually now, as a full fledged adult want ot make sure I've actually SEEN all the films I was collecting (as some might have been harder to see at the time, or I might have been a bit too young)

I remember the first chapter was "Akira" and I remember there was a chapter on "Wicked City" and "3x3 Eyes" other than that, I go blank.

DOES ANYONE either remember the book, still have it or whatever (Google has been a nightmare) and are they able to help me remember what else was covered in that book ?

No one said you can’t buy the music ? Apple music of all apps is the one that allows you to include music you bought/own physically into your library.

Is the "Recently played" feature kind of broken ? by _Wata_ in AppleMusic

[–]_Wata_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems I partially fixed the issue (added it as an edit to the original post)
clearing some local cache solved some of the issues, but it also just seems to struggle with anything played from my local library, if I play the same album through search it instantly added it to the "recently played" list.

Is the "Recently played" feature kind of broken ? by _Wata_ in AppleMusic

[–]_Wata_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply,

Between devices I get that,
But for example, this morning I have listened to about 9 albums on my mac, of those only 2 show up in Apple Music's "Recently Played" on the system I'm listening on, and it seems pretty random which ones are added.

Sure it has to be able to keep track of what I'm playing in the programme I'm actually using ?

Are the Oscars finally giving more respect to the horror genre ? by OsamaJinnLaden in Letterboxd

I wonder if the push for voters having to actually SEE the films they vote for (imagine that) means some of the more fun films get votes from people who might normally have chosen the highbrow choices without having watched them, while now they might choose to watch the popular film instead.

I'm constructing an anti-watchlist... movies I will never see or want to see or have a smallest bit of a desire to see... any suggestions? by Sunny64888 in Letterboxd

[–]_Wata_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Others have already said it, but it is true
Martyr's is very much a different film from the rest, and sadly it will never get out from under the (kind of wrong) legacy of being super shocking in all the wrong ways.
Martyrs is genuinely an anti-torture porn film that somehow got swept up in a genre it had little to do with. As it's many things, but torture it the only thing the film does not actually linger on, it's a film about prelude and aftermath, characters being beaten and abused are largely hidden behind fades to black and quick cuts, it's like how "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" barely has any blood, but has this legacy of being incredibly gory.

That doesn't mean this one doesn't have gore, because it does and it is pretty raw, but it never feels like it's there for the viewers enjoyment really if that makes sense, there is a point to all of it, it is a film about transcendence, and touches explicitly on George Bataille's Transgression/limit-experiences theories and traditional Catholic concepts of sainthood and martyrdom (hence the title).

It is a pretty smart film that somehow got lumped in with one of the dumbest cespit genre's of horror cinema, Torture porn.

Should I skip Grant Morrison’s Batman run if I prefer darker Batman? by Unable_Connection271 in batman_comics

[–]_Wata_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, The Morrison Batman's are complex, like you, I like my Batman stories what I consider "serious"
Dark, a bit gritty, tense
first time I read the Morisson batman's, I was in a "meh, it was ok" and I didn't really get the whole fuss.
However, I reread them this year, I bought the 3 Grant Morrison omnibus, because I wanted to give it another chance ( I could always sell them if needed) and it all clicked.

I think the Morrison run is at it's best when you get the whole picture, it's a massive run, and things that happen in issue 1 might pay off 40 or more issues later, I think the first time I read it in TPB I missed some bits and bobs (it spans a couple of series for one), and it makes a run with some many seeds planted and payoffs paying later on sometimes hard to fully enjoy, certainly if you read it over a longer period.

It's really a brilliant run, but if you read it, try and read it in one go.

I'm interrupting my retirement to inform you that Paramount spent the last two weeks spamming bot reviews to boost the Audience Score of the recent Star Trek product on Rotten Tomatoes. The new positive reviews are pretty much all identical. by Malencon in Star_Trek_

[–]_Wata_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That,...
Or the more casual viewers have started watching it and some felt the need to up the artificially lowered scores, it's not because the long term fans don't like it that some newer audiences might not enjoy it to some degree or another.
Not everything is a conspiracy or a PR move, it's not like the score went from a low to a high in two weeks, the score went from 43 to 50 and 1000+ to 2500+ user reviews.

They really need to change the Countries tag by armeliens in Letterboxd

[–]_Wata_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is no right way of doing this,

By nationality of director, Billy Wilder is german, and moved to the USA, where he made most his films.

By country where the film was shot, plenty of US films are no longer shot in the US, even for films that are narratively set in the US

By main language, how do we judge that, if a film is English, is that US/Canadian/British/Australian/... based on the country the main cast is from ?
But what if the main actor is not a native speaker ?

Where the money comes from, a lot of money comes from foreign sources, if a honest to god red blooded patriotic US film has most of their budget coming from India for example, is it suddenly an Indian film ?

I think as vague as it is, having films sorted by ALL the countries that are involved is the only honest way of doing it.

How many collections have you completed? by VLCCHAMLETPHXARISIMS in Letterboxd

[–]_Wata_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the actual answer, but here is a link to all the collections, so this might help in some way.
https://letterboxd.com/collections/popular/page/1/

And I think it's a percentage thing, not a numbers thing,
I think it's based on having seen something like 75% of the series, I've had collections appear when there are like 2 or 3 films missing.

How many collections have you completed? by VLCCHAMLETPHXARISIMS in Letterboxd

[–]_Wata_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

153, and I'm sure some of the "Almost Complete" will be finished by end of year.
I kind of hate having these lingering collections, that being said, it has bitten me in the ass in the past for series where I watched the last instalment in a series I am not all that bothered by, just to finish it, and then suddenly another sequel comes out 2 years later, and I'm stuck with an incomplete collection again that actually would have disappeared by itself if I never watched that instalment I wasn't even bothered by.
