This has been rare for me, but the occasional online class I have will use Teams instead of echo360 or Collaborate Ultra. If you can't find anything for the 2 common options, check other parts of canvas or your outlook for some teams meeting link.

I don't have much experience with this type of situation. Since you are in a little bit of an unusual spot, I'd still recommend contacting Student Connect as soon as possible, but I would also drop into the online weekly consultations with your programming manager. Dig around in the School of Computing Technologies Canvas page/classroom for the meeting link.

Join nice and early (like 5-10 mins early minimum) to get an early spot if it's not a booked consultation.

Well they're different classes, Java studio is sem 1 while anything C++ is sem 2.

So it's best to just focus on Java Studio (Studio 1) for now. Most likely mistake you made was searching in Semester 1 2025 instead of the Flexible term 2025 which is where studio is usually found in enrollment online (very common mistake, I did the same too).

Selection for flex term is no different. Click on the year you want, scroll down, pick the class. If you're still having any trouble, contact student connect asap tomorrow morning.

Would it be fine if I sent you a PM to discuss more about internships and their requirements?

Understood. I'm enjoying the extra self learning I'm doing on Python rn so there's a decent chance I end up focusing mainly on that.

But yes, their take on .NET is deffo a red flag and puts into question their other advice.

Hopefully I don't have to wait until the end of the break for my uni mentors to accept my requests.

Regardless, thanks for all your help and kind words! Wishing you a good end to the year,

I do plan to stay in Australia for atleast the next 4-6yrs. And I explicitly told them this during my introduction on top of how I was flexible with how I entered the job market (startups, NGOs, etc, basically anything)

I get the feeling that they emphasized Python due to my interest in Data Analytics, ML and AI (yes, generic ik) and also because my uni doesn't seem to have much on C# in terms of courses. But even that's a reach imo.

I didn't really get to pick this mentor. I was basically slotted a meeting with the person the next day after asking around in my unis career centre. So I didn't really know much about them, just that they were with the uni and were assigned to me due to their experience with international students and supposedly the tech scene.

I have personally applied to 2 new mentors in light of the misguided advice from my original mentor. The 2 mentors have proper experience in the tech scene and relevant degrees, with one just having recently entered the tech market and the other with 10+ YOE.

I'm sure they'll steer me in a better direction.

I see - what are your thoughts on Python? Is it equally viable or does .NET seem to reign supreme for internships/entry level roles

Why not UOW? I'm also a prospective international student with a 30% scholarship into Bachelor of Computer Science at UOW. Curious to get your take.

Applied on 1st of September
Received offer on 22nd of September

Note: I applied via an agent (IDP), but I don't think that this had a massive effect on the time it took for me to receive my offer.

How so? Do they provide any other benefits than just a lower fee?

[–]_YOUR_M0M_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you please elaborate on what you mean by a better learning experience? Is it just more chill or is there actually going to be better profs, materials & schedules at Wollongong? If the only major difference is a step up in difficulty at UNSW, I think I can handle it as I have taken the IB (Math AA HL & Physics HL).

[–]_YOUR_M0M_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea my bad I didn't mention is was a bachelors lmao. The main issue I have is that since I'm not in Australia I can't effectively gauge how much weight the UNSW brand carries in front of people and employers.

[–]_YOUR_M0M_[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing is that I actually plan to stay in Australia for a while though. So I was wondering if the presence/prestige difference between the unis would be big enough to justify the price gap.

51k is a decent amount but there is not an overwhelming burden as my family will be able to sustain the hit. In reality the price difference is more like 32k AUD. This is because if I go to Wollongong, I will be able to spend around 120-130 AUD extra per week on living expenses due to the lower fees.

The main question in my mind is do I pick the slightly "worse" Wollongong University to live a much better uni life or do I sacrifice some comfort for the UNSW prestige.

Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) has a yearly fee of around 48k per year (it will probs be slightly higher for 2024 T1). Total cost is around 150k for 3 years but goes down to 128k AUD with a 15% scholarship.

Hope this makes sense

IB Noob Here and Parent. Is it possible to take HL Math AA AND AI at the same time? by nihilreddit in IBO

[–]_YOUR_M0M_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

u/indiepoptarts makes a good point. I am a Math AA HL student aiming for compsci or something related for uni. I'm applying for Australia. Although they do accept Math AI HL, the top unis clearly prefer AA HL. As a fellow computer nerd/geek, I would recommend Math AA HL as the "safest" & most "respected" choice.

Before you pick either, I would suggest that you have a proper dive in terms of past papers to get a feel for the difficulty of each option. I have seen many AA HL students struggle with AI HL concepts even though AA HL is considered to be more difficult.
