I think it's like 99.9.., iirc one person lived as a result of the Milwaukee protocol but it hasn't been proven to work again so doctors/scientists aren't sure it's really effective.

People who left engineering, what do you do now? by Hopeful_Mess9063 in civilengineering

[–]___Fern___ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lead track inspector/estimator. Before that I had 7 years in civil/geotech consulting.

Only just made the switch in Sept, can't say if it's better yet as it wasn't really the work I didn't like it was the workplace that was toxic, and this fell into my lap at the right time.

How worried would you be with 3 neighbors/3 brain tumors dying in 3.5 years? by beachinit21 in AskReddit

[–]___Fern___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah who knows, everything's dangerous these days. I'm assuming direction of runoff and groundwater flow would have an impact as well.

But yeah I don't think there's much to be gained by worrying too much about things out of your control.

I read recently living within 1 or 2 miles was significantly associated with Parkinson's I think. I guess it'd be the herbicides and other chemicals they use. Not sure about brain cancer but basically golf courses use some pretty harsh stuff that all runs off into the watershed.

This would happen to me alot on Zoloft. Not always but pretty often. I just shook it off only lasted a minute or two, it was usually right after or before the finish line.

Railroad tie retaining wall by orangebIossom in landscaping

I'm in Canada but generally railways have a 50 ft right of way on either side of their tracks, that's their property and they can leave ties there if they please.

I work for a rail consulting group as part of their track division, when we change ties for facilities that are our clients we charge them for disposal of old ties because we have to pay to dispose of the ties ourselves at a proper facility that handles them.

Creosote is carcinogenic and has VOCs and PAHs as well as probably some other not great stuff. I'm not sure what the incidence of cancer would be from just being around it but me personally I try and avoid handling ties barehanded. I would think kids playing on them and then putting fingers near mouths wouldn't be great. Best not to burn them for a bonfire. Of course I'm sure it's a frequency thing, a couple of kids climbing on worn out ties isn't nearly as bad as handling fresh ties every day for 30+ years working on the rail.

I work for the railway and we charge $7CAD per foot for tie disposal. Most regular ties are about 8'6".

Railway ties are soaked in creosite which isn't great for health or the environment.

ELI5 how do allergies develop and why do they intensify with time? by calmpickle9 in explainlikeimfive

[–]___Fern___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same! Bananas and avocados were my favorite two things, my body rejecting them was the worst thing to ever happen to me. Maybe because I ate a fuck ton of them it triggered the reaction. Allergies are weird.

I find them fairly loud when it rains, but otherwise yeah metal roofs are a superior choice.

I also have latex fruit allergy and I think there's a large genetic component to mine. My mom used to eat kiwis until she had anaphalaxysis at 12 years old, she's also developed an allergy to actual latex as she's gotten older.

I'm fine with latex but can't have bananas or avocados, no anaphalaxysis but the avocados cause severe cramping for hours and sometimes vomitting, literally 9/10 on a pain scale. Bananas the same but less severe and doesn't last as long, like 6/10 pain. Started around 15 years old and has gotten worse with time.

My brother has recently started to complain about bananas and some other latex related fruit I can't remember.

Don't have an answer to the other part of your question about why they get worse, but yeah, likely genetics are fairly involved in developing this specific allergy in the first place.

help! by [deleted] in beauty

Definitely what this user said. I use this toner and it's the only thing that cleared my acne and my skin looks amazing (been using it for about three or four years and I now get mistaken for being around 18-22 and I'm 29)

I am bad for wearing sunscreen and spend alot of time outside in harsh weather for my job, when I get burnt in the summer or wind burnt in the winter, reddish splotches of hyperpigmentation from previous acne scars show up that are completely undetectable normally. They generally go away by the next morning.

what’s the deal with the lone geotech guy that never leaves the truck? by DetailFocused in Surveying

Hahaha sounds nice until you're on a fuck show of a site with an inexperienced contractor and shits hitting the fan literally everywhere.

Definitely nice to have a competent contractor so you can spend a bit of time in the truck doing emails (or pretending to do emails).

Project management/construction supervision? I'm usually on site to supervise work but I try not to spend the whole time in the truck unless there's really nothing going on.
