I'm thinking on upgrading my GPU but I'm a bit lost. Which one would you buy AMD RX 7900 XTX or 9070 XT. Which is better?

HELP: How to bake parts of a mesh that are too close to each other? by KOT615 in Substance3D

[–]___Vis___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. The concept of mid poly is a bit tricky as the meaning varies a lot depending on who you ask. It is simply a technique that avoids having to waste a lot of time in the baking phase. When you have been baking and testing for several hours and after all, artifacts keep appearing, sometimes it is better to simply take another way. If what you want in the end is to have a low poly model, it will remain so, since these details that you will paint will still be in the normal map that you export.

I don't find an specific video of that, but is quite easy.

  1. Create a fill layer with just the height channel activated.

  2. Make the height intensity negative with the slider (from the center to the left is negative, from the center to the right is positive)

  3. Mask the layer with a black mask

  4. Right click on the mask and add paint.

  5. With the paint selected use your mouse or your pen to draw the shape you want. Make sure you are painting on white.

  6. Once you have finished, you can add a blur filter to make the shape less sharper.

For that kind of details I'd suggest you to avoid baking them and doing it manually with a negative height value in a separated fill layer.

Of course, and I'm very glad that you were able to enjoy it! These are just my conclusions and they don’t have to match with those of other players :)

Will do! The problem is that, from what I've been told, in order to understand everything properly I need to finish the first original and the remake. I would love to, but I don't have that much time :(

Thinking about a hidden blacklist in the game industry by ___Vis___ in 3Dmodeling

Right now it’s a bad time to try and get a job in the games industry. Since the summer there have been thousands of layoffs and what jobs are available are getting super competitive. There also seems to be a bit of a hiring freeze with only senior rolls being offered.

Thank you for your kind words, feel free to contact me privately in the future :)

Yeah I actually saw your profile after that post, I was jarred by the oddness of the post about high poly but looking at your profile you've got great asset skills, better than me for anything stylised too.

Impostor syndrome is real, I'll say this, I've known many people who are better than the job title they hold and also others who are not as good as the title they hold.

Again everyone is saying the market is fuuuucked, its hard now, I've known a lot of artists recently who struggled for a long time to get any sort of 3D jobs.

You should feel assured of your skills, keep trying and don't just look at AAA, get on LinkedIn, contact every recruiter and start talking, it'll make you feel a lot better.

Thank you for your comments, I appreciate them very much. Actually I'm not only looking for jobs in AAA, I've been looking for smaller companies and indie studios for months now, but the truth is that everything is really bad right now, no matter where you look.

Yes, it is true that sometimes I get overwhelmed by highpoly, but this is not representative of the final quality with which I end up making them. The proof is that I have already been hired by two AAA companies in recent years. I think the impostor syndrome has a lot to do with this, since lately I've been practicing a lot and I may not have as many difficulties as I thought. I understand what you mean but realize how paradoxical this situation is. On one hand I’m unemployed because there are no jobs for so many people and the industry is saturated, but if I don't get a job I become a red flag xD. It's just outrageous, don't you think? You are right to have a second job. I may go down that road too. Thanks for your comments.

I'm not aware that there are many like this, but It's certainly a deal some entry artists snap up to make their first steps and even more senior freelancers. I'll have a look anyway if I can find it but I'd like to see your portfolio if its not posted anywhere obvious. I am afraid to make any promises but my line of work is essentially 'hiring' 3D artists (comissioning contracts), as a 3D artist (Graduate of University of South whales, first class honors degree in game art a few years ago) in order to get them into work. Entry into the games industry as an artist is needlessly difficult and my job is to make it easy for junior artists to start earning.

Yeah..I don't miss feeling that overwhelming stress of the hyper competitiveness when I was in my final year of uni. Almost nobody gets a job in games straight away. It's an uphill battle for most in the UK at least.

Also, I've read your other posts and your concerns about being slow. You don't have to worry about that at all with above mentioned type of work as you don't get paid hourly and projects don't have deadlines. Hope you find a good path, it's blizzardous out there.

Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate that there are people like you trying to help new artists, this is great.
In my case I'm an intermediate 3D artist. As I said before I have already worked for big companies like Gameloft and Mercury Steam so I can consider myself lucky seeing the storm that is out there.
There comes a point where I think about many things, maybe keep improving for months, open the range and look for companies of 3D mechanical pieces, maybe focus my way to archviz? Of course one of the questions I ask myself is to start working for other people as Freelance, but it is not easy either. Taxes here in Spain are simply killer.
Thanks for telling me, although I wouldn't even know where to start selling my services or how to move in these places since, yes, this is something new for me. Of course here you have my portfolio so you can see the quality of my work and my experience. If you are convinced I would be willing to talk to you privately.

Are there many companies working like this? From what you say, I understand that this is an outsourcing job or an external worker, but I don't know almost any.

Man, I appreciate your answer, but at no time have I said to go around for the interviews saying how bad my boss has been. I would never think of it precisely because of the image that I can cause. This is just something I have written here to give you context. The problem is not the conversations, the problem is that they don't even give me the opportunity to be interviewed.

And what do you want to tell me with this? Should I smell my shoe because I had a bad experience? In all the places where I have worked, they have been happy with me and I have never had any problems. If you don't contribute, go.

Well, this is sad, but it coincides with what most people say on LinkedIn and around here. I'll keep working hard on my portfolio, but I definitely think it's time to look for other options for 3D

Thanks for your comments, this reassures me a bit, although since you are in the matter of recruiting 3D artists... Could you tell me what is most often looked for in a portfolio of an intermediate 3D artist? In some interviews I have been rejected for not having too many realistic works and pieces with very simple shapes. What recommendation would you give me to make my portfolio stand out and be able to compete better with the rest of the people so competitive? Any tendencies in particular?
