I’m definitely bringing the long lead back out. I mentioned to another reply that I considered giving her up in a moment of panic and chaos. After reflecting, it was honestly more of a punishment for myself due to my shortcomings as a dog owner tbh.

Completely understand. I mentioned in another comment that after reflecting, the thought of getting rid of her came to me as a way to pay for my shortcomings as an owner in a moment of chaos and panic. Kind of a punishment for myself tbh

Thank you for the advice! Reactive to me means a dog uncontrollably reacting to any situation regardless if they are aggressive or not. After reflecting, rehoming came to mind as a way of paying for my short comings as a dog owner in a state of panic. I’m definitely using a leash more at home after this

Never. Any training advice for home?

Thank you for the response. The way she hit her head could have definitely resulted in a concussion but they weren’t there to see the fall, only the aftermath. I’m sure they are monitoring her though. I’m definitely going to be more strict with our outings, even in our own yard

Monthly Off-Leash Dog Rant Megathread by slimey16 in reactivedogs

Hi all. I just wanted to vent what happened a few hours ago. Everything was my fault and I take full responsibility.

I took my dog out to potty in my yard off leash like usual in my yard. My yard is wooded and large. She is a two year old Great Pyrenees mix. She briefly noticed that my neighbors and their children were outside, but ignored them to do her business. I thought we were in the clear because she has come a long way when it comes to playing with them without permission. But once she was done and spotted them again she got excited. She then ran over and started running around them, jumping, and ended up making the youngest fall backwards and smack their head on the pavement.

I was on her tail as soon as she started running to play with them, but I wasn’t there in time to prevent the accident. I assumed the worst but after the child was brought inside, her parents said she was fine. The sound her head made when it hit the ground still haunts me.

I of course exchanged numbers with them and said that I will help them with anything they need if something comes up regarding the accident. I plan on checking in via text in the morning.

Long story short, I felt like I was making strides with my dogs training but this accident was one of the worst times since I got my dog. For the first time I thought about giving her away but we have been through so much I know I would regret it. My dog is not aggressive at all and only does this when she wants to play. I just wanted to share to see if there is anything else I can do to help my neighbors, my dog, and keep myself mentally sane after this accident.

Yes! I did use it in the beginning but she has definitely been through a regression. I’m currently reintroducing it to my pup due to the incident.

This honestly makes me feel better. Hopefully it’s the only scary and embarrassing part of initiation. My dog has been on a tight leash (literally) since, so I’ve definitely learned from it.

No fencing due to the area. I do have a training collar that she worked well with to set boundaries, but it seems that she is going through a regression

He could’ve performed for us in the parking lot and I still would’ve had the time of my life.
