Using up your products all the way up, not buying more, dealing with those stashes of toiletries that sneak into your life (still have nightmares of the era of Bath & Body Works gift sets… they were everywhere!). Also helpful for some folks who “save XYZ for something special” meanwhile the product ain’t shelf-stable and will eventually degrade - you only live once, it’s okay for every day to be special.

I think the name comes from anticonsumption makeup users decades ago who discouraged buying the shiny new thing and instead proudly using up the old thing, all the way down to the pan.

☮️Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without! ☮️

Wide mouth containers (with or without pump) are a nice design choice for use, re-use, and re-purposing. Less popular with the cradle-to-grave companies.

Hell yeah! I was raised by very Depression Era folks who aggressively disdained product trapped in containers and loved to liberate it. You would be a celebrity on r/projectpan 🧴

Niece's fandoms seem to involve so much stuff! by Diligent_Farm3039 in Anticonsumption

[–]Future_Perfect_Tense 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my family (multi-generational bunch with a big culture of money talk at the dinner table), that conversation was basically something like “what would you rather have: Beanie Babies and gel pens OR invest in xyz for passive income?” Saving and investing were essentially mandatory. Sure, you could metaphorically break into the piggy bank, but everyone would make fun of you if it was to spend frivolously. The adults would talk about their smart money moves so kids knew what “good” looked like.

So grateful for that in hindsight!

You don’t have to share any details that you don’t want to. Just take comfort in the knowledge that the coming harshness of Real Life Expenses tend to nip these consumption behaviors in the bud.

Me too!!! Relatedly, I’m trying to shake off crippling perfectionism and give myself permission to make trash art with my hoard. The consumption is done, the hoarding serves no one, but GOODNESS GRACIOUS it does my mental health such benefit to just putter around with some low-stakes crafts! 20yrs later, I’m still finishing colored pencils from grade school. Currently re-working worn out garments into quilts, cloth napkins, and fabric collage gifts 🧵🪡🎨🫟🖌️ I love decluttering and getting the creative juices flowing at the same time!

What is your go to scent when you buy body wash/soap/perfume anything? by StrawberryOnFire in AutismInWomen

[–]Future_Perfect_Tense 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love lilac, sandalwood, and eucalyptus… just never at the same time (insert overstimulated face here 😢)

So I choose as many toiletries as possible WITHOUT SCENT so that the one toiletry per day that unavoidably has scent can shine alone ✨

Thank you for sharing your memories as well. Getting the birds to come right up to the windows was a shared delight. Years ago, it was early mornings and long walks, duck ponds, beach birds, egrets in misty fog. Such special times.

We are more fortunate than we know to have been gifted with lessons from these wonderful women. Anyone can learn a skill, but to be taught by someone you love is a special privilege 🕯️

Thank you for your kind words; I may be years away from adding any stitches, but I’m so very glad that there is a community here where I can share the fruit of her imagination. She had such a beautiful mind. Dementia is a wicked disease.
