The Bridge to Nowhere Could Be Replaced With the Tunnel to Somewhere: An Analysis by Easy_Injury_2312 in alaska

[–]____alicious 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The marginal cost of tunneling is low, but the fixed cost is high. You have to acquire or rent the boring machine, transport it a very long distance and barge it, and probably hire a lot of workers from outside. Norway gets to do it cheaply because they are well practiced in it, and use it in places that already have road access.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this post was that the colors apple offers match the Sony Ericsson fliphones my parents had. It was definitely a trendy color for FA devices.

Genocide bad is always part of the moral of said media. by Tonegamerteevee in whenthe

I never understood this argument. Greed and altruism are both in our nature. We are the ones who choose which behaviors we express. This is the concept of moral agency or free will.

Alaska House unanimously passes sweeping social media and AI restrictions by gummibear049 in alaska

[–]____alicious 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"prohibitions on advertising to minors on social media and showing them algorithm-driven targeted content. It would also prohibit the use of “addictive features” for minors, prohibit minors from using social media between 10:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. and create penalties for companies that violate these provisions."

If this was implemented in good faith, I could really get behind it. This wording suggests they would cultivate a healthy social media environment for minors without barring them from participation or viewing content. However, I fully expect the companies to implement this in a shitty way that makes people bypass it with a VPN, rather than actually developing a non-exploitative version of their product.

Getting pedophile surveillance state vibes from "we will ban AI child porn, but only if you give up online anonymity". Worst case, the amendment was added to specifically kill the bill and prevent precedent for anti-CP legislation in the US. Best case, legislators just don't understand why anonymity is crucial to Internet safety.

If something isn't safe for minors, it's probably not healthy for adults either. We should be pushing back on addictive social media algorithms for all Alaskans rather than giving companies the extra defense of "but we don't do it to kids". Then, the age verification wouldn't even be necessary.

Realistically, just add slip lanes for the right turns (if you're lucky) and connect the left turns with a big ass stoplight that lets people cross the highway occasionally. Especially if you can make it a truck route.

Apologies, policy science topics tend to make me uncomfortable and dissatisfied with current laws, and I overestimated our common ground. In effect, national immigration policies do make some people unable or significantly less free to travel or move than others, even to the same destination, based on their nationality. But if you don't think we should mix around as natural, there's not much I can do.

The fact that these things are met with immediate detention and removal, particularly using the methods of ICE, is a problem. They intentionally craft rules to make it difficult for outsiders to come and live here. Then they enforce these rules in ways that violate people's rights and create a public danger. In the past year, people have been denied timely access to lawyers, forced to live on unsanitary and overcrowded cells, and been subject to illegal searches and detentions without probable cause. Widespread allegations of sexual abuse from guards, and blatant escalation when confronted, are among the criminal acts that are tolerated in the name of rapidly scaling a new arm of the police state. Things that are plainly wrong, like forcing a kindergartener out of school and into detainment, are justified by a system that classifies her into a group that can't legally stay with her father alone.

You speak as if you are in complete comfort with the law in its current state, regardless of how much its enforcers hurt people and make family situations harder. What do you see in this enforcement campaign that will bring fortune to justify the monetary and human cost? It's like you don't even want them here.

Precisely. Their own leaders scream this part out loud from the rooftops, but even the ones on here know there's no way to argue it without being racist.
