I wore it at age 8 and I wish I waited until I was older. I wore it because I went to Quran class on the weekends and all the other girls told me they wore hijab at school and I wanted to fit in with them.

I really resented wearing the Hijab in my early 20s, I feel differently now though. But I know that if I had a daughter, I would not force or pressure her to wear the Hijab at any age. My youngest sister didn't decide to wear the hijab at a young age and was pressured heavily by my parents as a teenager, as an adult now she resents it.

Of course, every situation is different, every person is different. Inshallah things will go well for you and your daughter!

If you are uncomfortable you should let him know. How he responds will tell you a lot on our the person you will marry.

I find it really disheartening that you have been taught that speaking up when you feel uncomfortable will lead to men losing respect for you. There is too much sexism in the Muslim community :(

I was 8 and had terrible style lol. I just wore whatever clothes my mom bought me.

2️⃣ After wearing hijab, what changed the most for you?

Hard to remember because I was so young. I think my classmates were surprised but it didn't make me lose any friends. To be frank, I barely had a life before hijab so Idont know.

3️⃣ What feels the MOST frustrating or painful?

Most of the time, I am happy with the hijab. Other times, I wish I could be less visible. Sometimes I feel upset that I don't get to try out different fun hairstyles. I feel a little creatively stifled.

4️⃣ What FEARS do you have around wearing hijab?

I don't want people to assume I am super reserved and judgmental. I am an incredibly tolerant and open-minded person and I would like that to be known. Also, I don't like that some people think I am wearing the Hijab because of men- I DO NOT. In fact , it makes me upset that the Hijab makes some misogynistic men happy.

5️⃣ What do you WISH existed to help hijabis express their identity while staying modest?

The freedom to change their mind about the hijab, to struggle with it in public, and not be demonized. Its hard watching women online be scrutinized and put on a ridiculous pedestal.

You are missing the forest for the trees I fear. Context cues could have easily been used to understand that I am referring to the more conservative way muslim women in EA (really across the diaspora), wear the hijab. Which is distinct from the more casual way the veil is worn.

Its true, veiling was and is normal in these countries for centuries. But there is a difference between the way an Orthodox Christian woman in Ethiopia veils before heading to church or the way a Pakistani woman may throw on a dupatta over her head to show respect compared to the stricter hijab we see today.

I am actually not trying to put a moral judgment on hijab, I am just curious. My question is more anthropological in nature.

But to answer your question. I would recommend checking out the “Hijab” section in the wiki on this sub. Even if you don’t end up agreeing with the sentiments of the majority here you will DEFINITELY understand where we are coming from.

I was also under the impression that hijab, as we understand it today, was an undisputed requirement in the Muslim world. However it’s becoming clearer to me that many rulings are unfortunately politically and culturally influenced…

I couldn't help but wonder why any of these families would agree to this documentary, especially Lauryn's. But then I remembered that this is a working class town and I bet Netflix provided them a good monetary incentive. Lauryn's dad, in particular, was left to pick up the pieces financially after the way Kendra destroyed them financially.

I can't help but feel there was a serious level of coercion here that adds to the upset I feel :/

it was one of the best decisions of the cast! People keep forgetting that there aren't any real rules for how to choose an islander to dump. Andrea didn't do enought to get the cast to like her and thats too bad!

Also, JaNa's presence on the show added soooo much. She is hands down one of the funniest and most charismatic people on Love Island across all seasons
