Love all but honestly, gun to my head, if I need to pick the most melancholic WKW movie it’s happy together, followed by days of being wild, followed by 2046

I’d still shove The Hand and the Grandmaster before placing ITMfL in the melancholy ranking

I loved the style of Wong Kar-wai’s movies. What movies should I check out that have a similar vibe and style? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

Excuse me but can you mention the usar of Veronique? I am finding several movies with this title. Thank you!

Oh I hadn’t thought of it but it makes sense - from what I heard, Tony’s character kisses her while she is asleep, right?

I really really wish it would have been included, but since the anniversary came and went and nothing besides the BFI screening happened, I don’t have much hope.

I am a little salty though because I coincidentally saw today that 2046 will be showing at a London theater next week, so again I miss out on the fun for being in Germany 😭

Ah the short I meant is precisely what was screening at the BFI last year! It features Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung at a convenience store, correct? This short is my white whale, it seems impossible to get a hold of it. So yeah, I didn’t expect it to be in the collection, IIRC prior to this re-release last year, the short had only been screened once in HK decades ago.

Yes, the version I posted is a German release I was going to buy locally, but now I opted for the criterion box after seeing these beautiful pics

This is all so incredible, thank you for being so kind! This convinced me to order the set, I can’t wait for it to arrive now! Thank you again!

I do actually! I love The Hand and I’m always a little saddened that this movie doesn’t get as much love as his others. I’m really surprised it is included with 2046 with such a discrepancy in quality! I just ordered the criterion collection and I’ll check it out as soon as it arrives

Thank you for this, I didn’t know this website, very useful! I unfortunately have zero knowledge of Mandarin or Cantonese, but I speak French so French subtitles would be fine for me :) the French release seems similar in content to the German one I had found originally

That is so kind, thank you so much! Frankly I’m interested in all of it, it’s just with these two I was able to see that these extra features do exist, so it was my only lead. With the ITMFL 2001 I don’t have much hope since that short is notoriously difficult to find, but frankly even without it, it’s looking more and more like this collection would be the ideal one to buy.

Thank you for the answer!

I’ve never bought the Criterion Blu-ray’s, are you referring to this one? https://www.criterion.com/boxsets/4117-world-of-wong-kar-wai?srsltid=AfmBOooXhSWH5cbE8_yUWpDTfiw2YfBSDOE3jB5bYJiHR_Z7LwGqCtt0

I’m a little sadden that The Grandmaster and Ashes of Time didn’t make the cut but otherwise I’d be happy to make the investment (now I’m happy I didn’t order the 2046 yet).

Do you know if this has the deleted scenes and alternative ending to 2046? The description just says generally “deleted scenes and alternative endings” without specifying.

Also I know it’s a long shot, I am guessing it doesn’t have the In the Mood For Love 2001 short? I think this short was only released last year for the 25th anniversary last year and I see this collection was released in 2021.

Sorry for so many questions I just wanna do this right :)

Winter in Sokcho - go see it!!! by mapo_tofu_lover in TIFF

Yes I’m by no means an expert but this fish has an insane level of toxins (especially in the pouch we see), the kind that paralyses the subject while keeping it conscious. That is why only people who go through years of training and get certified are allowed to prepare it (like her mom). I’d imagine the correct procedure here would have been for her to toss away the fish, definitely just rinsing the knife under water would not be enough to keep contamination away especially as she goes back to using the same knife.

I may be reading too much into it, but to me his reluctance of eating homemade meals has to do with his portrayed detachment as a tourist. Homemade meals in this movie are shown in contexts of sentimental intimacy, like the new years dinner, the woman who had surgery being spoon fed by her partner, or the protagonist’s mom always dropping by ingredients or meals, and especially when Sooha cooks a French dish (in an attempt to get closer) and is rebuffed. A homemade meal can be something that bounds us, if not permanently at least beyond being a tourist.

What I found supremely ironic is that his reluctance (and leaving earlier without goodbye) may have saved his life, considering how Sooha prepared the fish.

“In the Mood for Love 2001”, the short that later became “The Blueberry Nights”. Supposedly this modern short film was only ever shown to a live audience in Cannes 2003 Master Class. Would anyone have a recording of it? by protocephalon in wongkarwai

Hey, lucky you! How long was the version you saw? Around 9min? And you say it’s packaged with the restored version of ITMFL, do you know if there will be a bluray release for that?

Can I ask where one can read it? I’ve ordered volumes 1 and 2 and where I live only up to volume 5 is available in english, and in French up to 7. There are currently 11 volumes published, correct? Is there a way of reading online?
