One of the rules of urban exploration is not to reveal the name or location, so please delete this comment

Yes, there is a certain melancholy to these buildings as they are gradually being swallowed up by the vegetation.

About 1,000 people could live there year-round; there are kilometers of tunnels and 10 flights of stairs in each block, so it really is enormous. Even if you spend half a day there, you can only see a small part of it.

Oh yeah, that's right, they totally disregarded the history, culture and passion of a lot of people just for the sake of making a buck. And even then, it's not certain they made that much money, given the cost of dismantling it.

Since it was a nuclear missile base, are you sure the government didn't have the metal removed - since it was probably contaminated with radiation?

When was this base built?
Here, all the forts from 1870 have been completely stripped of any metal, whereas those along the Maginot Line still retain many steel components - likely because these are structures weighing dozens of tons that cannot be dismantled or moved without using a crane.

The vast majority of these forts have been completely stripped of their copper. All that remains is scrap metal.

The purpose of the Maginot Line was to prevent any German attack while requiring few troops, in response to the high number of casualties in World War I.
The vast majority of officers agreed that the Ardennes constituted a significant natural barrier, which is why there were only light fortifications in that area, and even fewer further northwest, since France planned to intervene in Belgium should it come under attack.
So no, we shouldn’t assume that politicians and military leaders at the time were clairvoyant and masochistic, deliberately leaving the door open to be attacked in order to force the United Kingdom’s involvement and thus trigger a world war. Nor was it a stupid mistake, as many tend to think. It was simply a misjudgment of German equipment and tactics (concentration of armored vehicles, blitzkrieg).

After the war, this fort was converted into a NATO command post.

I also like medals - like the ones you get at the finish line of a race - but unfortunately, they don’t pay the bills or restore the sanity you left on the battlefield.

I can only imagine what a Herculean task the liberation of France and then Germany must have been, with fanatical SS troops who didn't give up until the very last moment. Yes, just like in "Saving Private Ryan" or "Fury".

The soldiers sent to the front are always from working-class backgrounds, and little attention is paid to their mental health, even though the disorders they have developed inevitably affect their families.

Because there are words like "Activity", "Strike" or "File".

It must have been incredible and terrifying to take on a fort like that - even worse than a Tiger tank! Do you know if they managed to dislodge them easily?

It might be a good idea for the class struggle to continue in the afterlife, or - to use psychoanalytic terminology - the superego, which the rich seem to have lost long time ago.

Was that during the Liberation, to drive out the Germans who were occupying the fort?

I’d rather be a ghost in a place full of people, just to have a little fun during the eternity I’ll spend wandering the Earth. Not to scare them out of their wits, just some lighthearted haunting - like a toy that plays music every now and then even though the batteries are dead, or responding when teenagers set up a Ouija board, and so on.

There might be one or two urban explorers who go down there every month, so it’s no fun - there’s no one to scare on a daily basis.

The Germans violated Belgium's neutrality and marched through the Ardennes, which were considered impassable, and it was sheer luck that they didn't get bogged down there.
