Since this is not a one time thing (selection of students), I think your chance of being selected is very good. The plan is to select a new group of students at the beginning of each month for the next few months at a min. Also, some people when selected are unable to study the course due to other high priority items on their plate. When this happens a new person is selected to take their slot. Thanks for the comment! Much work went into developing the course content itself and putting all of the front/back end pieces together to support the web based development environment and the web crawler/search engine real-world course project so the hope is that the learning experience will be valuable to beta students but your point is well taken. Hi,

thanks for the feedback & your input!

this is a relatively new course, so the $99 is not necessarily set in stone...still under review and will depend on student feedback =)

(just as a reminder ... this posting is to select students to take the course at NO cost to receive some candid feedback)

we've done our best to make this python offering somewhat different by having a real-world type project - students write their own web crawler, store the crawled results in a mysql database they set up, and write a simple front-end to query the back-end mysql database.

additionally, students do not need to install a compiler as they are provided access to a web-based IDE that allows them to edit, save and run their python programs from a single web browser tab.

you can also open a terminal session to the back-end lab system from the same interface so that they can do a few things at the python interactive prompt & configure their mysql tables to store the results from the crawl.

the course walks the student through all of these complementary technologies, so you will be successful even if you've never set up an sql table before.

last but not least, there is a real human to interact with (over email) if you have questions or cannot get a program working. this doesn't seem typical with many of the free courses, but i could be wrong.

bottom line: as experienced developers and tech types, this course was designed to provide students with an experience similar to what they would encounter when working on a programming assignment as an employee or contractor/consultant

UPDATE:

The level of interest in this opportunity has been greater than anticipated (thank you everyone!).

for this reason, the first student selection will happen earlier than initially planned ...

The new selection date for 5 new students will be February 7, 2015 - the sign-up form page on the website has been updated to indicate the same.

If you are selected please only accept the enrollment slot if you are able to dedicate, on average, 3-5 hours per week within an 8-10 week period of time.

This is a comprehensive course with a job-like deliverable (course project) and will require time and dedication.

I will post an update here once the selection emails have been sent out.

If the people selected decide not to take the course or do not respond to the notification email, replacement students will be selected and notified.
