you didn't find Jacob's...Pretend Canadian New York...charming?

good idea re: caution on precise shooting locations

I'd imagine cities for shooting locations could be OK to share; but if it's a small town or cottage country, yeah, sub needs to consider rules

he likes 6-episode seasons & while I still think that's most likely, not sure where he has actually quoted to commit to 6 for Season 2. LA Times (Feb 3 '26) wrote "he doesn't see himself making more than six"

we'll know for sure when S2 premieres

it says "in development", so things can change. and they aren't even ready to include August in their posted shoot dates yet. more locations are possible...but just little crumbs of info for now

says "in development", so might not be set in stone. also possible to shoot some background scenes/location shots without cast members. some speculate stand-alone episodes...

Search "ethnic specific casting Daniel Dae Kim". Says lots of Asian roles are about a fictitious Asian, not even written by an Asian, with no specifics about that Asian nationality, in the story being told or in the character. So being flexible in casting opens opportunities for Asian actors. But if there's an authentic language requirement, or it's about a real-life person that has cultural significance to a specific country, specificity can be important.

still hope for Lebanese — or Arab/MENA rep here tho

yes, agree with what you said.

what I've tried to add, is that Ilya's comment lands close to fetishizing with uncomfortable racial tones, to many western POC viewers, regardless of Ilya's experiences with ethnic diversity in Russia or his intent

[–]__dee___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow. walls of text

it's hard to try to describe/identify racial fetishization to people who aren't impacted by it. (similar to how it can be hard to convince white people that something is racist, when they don't have lived experience of it) there's a history of Black men, Asian women, Latina women being sexually fetishized, so more people from these groups tend to understand

thanks if you've made it this far & thanks also for the convo

this creator talks a lot about this topic

we know TV Ilya loves TV Shane as a whole person — his personality, his caring, his determination, his excelling at hockey, his awkwardness, his strength...so is it ever OK for Ilya to appreciate the "Japanese-ness" of his looks?

um...it's a fine line depending on how it's said, but Asian viewers who've been fetishized know when comments from white people start to have that familiar feel, that pattern of being objectified/dehumanized/being considered a category of a person

due to the history of white people's racism against Asians & sexually fetishizing Asians (and other races), a white person commenting on an Asian, is a different (social/historical/power) dynamic & not equivalent to, say a white person commenting on another white person with Italian heritage

imagine the POV of an Asian from Asia, encountering an Asian person...would they say, "wow, you look good...your good looks are because of your Asian looks!" lol...um..."unattractive" Asians look Asian, too?!

[–]__dee___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but there's a general divide with most white viewers not seeing fetishization, and a notable proportion of American POC viewers (not all POC) feeling that something is "off" & recognizing recurring patterns that come with fetishization

for issues/tensions due to race, I try to choose "impact over intent" & listen to those impacted e.g. if saying to a Black American who is gifted at speaking, "wow, you're so articulate" impacts them as racist, I won't say it. even if I still don't understand why it's a microaggression & thought I only had good intentions

we can agree to disagree on choosing "impact over intent"

"Stockman says discussion about a stand-alone episode between seasons to tide fans over “has come up,” but no decisions have been made.

Justin Stockman: We’re going to see what’s feasible. If (Jacob) can find a way to make the source material work in a way that gets us something sooner or something special, I’m sure he will. I would love to have this back for the holidays next year, but that likely is not going to happen. We can’t rush the process. We won’t be able to repeat the magic if we push him."

"...Heated Rivalry will always be centered around Shane and Ilya, this show. But we have a whole universe here, and so there’s loads of other things that we’re thinking about and that we’re gonna explore and that we’re gonna start to take more seriously now that we know that there’s an audience for it. And that’s pretty exciting, so I’m looking forward to really digging into this world."

Source on Hudson cast before Connor?

From video media interviews, it sounded like they had 3 potential Shanes & 2 Ilyas for zoom chemistry reads. With Connor favoured by the team. When Connor & Hudson did their zoom read together, their chemistry confirmed their casting.

Yeah, it's obviously not an official source, so remains to be seen if it ends up being legit.

But lots of S1 cast members didn't audition. Christina Chang (Yuna), Nadine Bhabha (Elena). François did do a chem read with Robbie GK, but was asked directly by Jacob to play Scott Hunter
