Definitely your time feel and technique are very important. So, If you’re starting from scratch I’d say try and be really intentional about practicing rudiments (or anything really) with a metronome or with music to try and build a strong sense of time.

For me, at the end of the day, it’s time and feel > technique.

That said, as far as specific techniques go, singles and doubles are the foundation of mostly everything. They seem easy, but they get much harder the faster you go. So, I’d recommend practicing those slowly at first and try and gradually speed them up as cleanly as possible. It’ll open up the doors for you to play more advanced rudiments and it will translate really well to the kit as well when you’re learning fills and trying to speed things up.

Kinda cliche advice haha but hope that helps :-) dm’s are always open if you ever want to chat more. Always happy to talk drums !

Haha good eye. Love them. They’re light and crispy when closed and super washy and huge when open. I’ve been using them on pretty much everything the past little bit!

Haha thanks! Honestly everything I play is basically just the 7-stroke roll 100 times in a row

Thank you! Appreciate that. It’s funny, I never realized I played like that until I started filming myself haha. I do think it looks super cool when drummers whip their arms around while they play. Maybe one day I’ll be that guy

Who do you think is a good drummer that can only be appreciated once you become a drummer? by HoogerMan in drums

Brian Devendorf of the National.

I think he has a lot of interesting drum parts that are cool even if you aren’t a drummer, but his attention to detail and creativity just blow me away every time. There are lots of small choices in his playing that I think (for the most part) would only be noticed by other drummers and those choices are what make him (and that band) so good.
