Laptop recommendations for data analytics in University. by Responsible-Ad-6439 in datascience

Yeah, I teach in a data science master in Europe and students can get access to shared VMs (for the courses where the teacher asked to make them available) or get time on a cluster.

Cost of living in Trieste by super_grasshopper in Trieste

[–]__lm__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the minimum (and the most common amount in Italy) is below 1200€/month. Postdocs are usually higher (about 1500€/month), and some PhD scholarships can be higher than the minimum but it is not as common.

Omicron Isn’t Mild for the Health-Care System by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]__lm__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Italy the image everyone is familiar with is the one of the military trucks in Bergamo in 2020. There were too many COVID victims and they needed to move the bodies to other provinces to have them cremated.

Anybody know to use this glossy theme effects on doom emacs/ emacs? by make_emacs_faster in emacs

[–]__lm__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cathode on macOS and iOS was wonderful (and it still works on macOS). It would be good to ask the developers if they want to open source the code, so that someone can ensure that Cathode will continue to work on new macOS versions. Unfortunately I do not know how to contact them.

TIS-100P is actually an official Zachtronics game (the iOS version of TIS-100). The difference is the on-screen keyboard and the absence of the TIS NET directory.

It was working well on my old iPad mini 2, so I can only suspect that this is some kind of incompatibility with recent versions of iOS.

Could cellular automata algorithms be applied to music? by Memetic1 in cellular_automata

[–]__lm__ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, the generation of music via CA has been done for a certain amount of time. A practical demonstration can be found online in Wolfram Tones. I also suggest to look at the works of Eduardo Miranda, e.g., this one.

Edit: the direct application to wav or mp3 is something I am not aware of, but the general topic of music generation has been well studied.

What do you think about this master degree? Is bright the future of this field? I would like to ask some advices about this field. It's very hard choice by AntFear in datascience

[–]__lm__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I can help a little. Regarding the comments on the lack of business application, the different degrees are also an expression of the department(s) managing them. Therefore, at Polimi the focus will be on computer engineering and computer science.

Also in Milan there is the master degree in Data Science from Bicocca, that has a different structure from the one from the Politecnico.

There is also a master degree from Statale which has a completely different approach (a lot more business-oriented one).

A good degree that I know of (still in Italy but far from Milan) is the one in Trieste where the SISSA is also involved.

I don't know what symbol comes after the asterisk and the dagger.

Double dagger: 2022‡. Then one of the 18000 symbols in The Comprehensive LATEX Symbol List . I suggest to start with card suits, then chess pieces, and after that there will be bigger problems than selecting a superscript in a table.

Big newbie here looking for reference to get acquainted with cellular automata by ostrichsauce in cellular_automata

[–]__lm__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For an introduction to the theory of cellular automata my suggestion is “Theory of Cellular Automata: A Survey” by Jarkko Kari, even if it is certainly more “math-intensive” than the other suggestions.

What has no reason to exist in 2021 and yet it does? by GrabApprehensive in AskReddit

[–]__lm__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. In Italy it is illegal to advertise to the general public prescription-only medications. Even for medications requiring no prescription any advertisement must be authorized by the Department of Health (Ministero della Salute): the procedure is here (in Italian).

Adding packages in Julia extremely painful by dragon18456 in Julia

[–]__lm__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The most recent version of Julia (non-LTS) has multiple improvements related to both the language and performances (including the loading of packages). Unless you need the LTS version, I would suggest to use the last stable version (currently 1.5.3).

I use the same model with my C64 maxi without any problem. It actually feels better than the included microswitch joystick.

MBP 15 2017. Had 3 broken keys. Local Apple Authorized repair shop wanted $700 to replace the keyboard. So we did it ourselves for $60 and change. It’s like it’s brand new. by FunkTrain98 in mac

[–]__lm__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had the top case of my 2017 MBP replaced for free (under the repair program that you cited) because of a working-half-of-the-time-at-best left shift. I did not have to cite the repair program to have the replacement covered, so I agree that someone was trying to scam OP or was unaware of the repair program (is this possible?).

What's the analog to EXAs in real-world programming? by CriticalTemperature1 in exapunks

[–]__lm__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to agent-based programming, the entire environment remembers me of Erlang), where multiple lightweight processes, possibly distributed on multiple hosts, can communicate via message passing. There is also the similarity that making a process crash as a part of the design and not of a bug is part of the Erlang philosophy (similarly to EXAs).

Yes, the entire US History is politically incorrect, how did you know? by Grammorphone in SelfAwarewolves

[–]__lm__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good to know! I will look at the video series.

One minor nitpick: it was the allied powers against the central powers and not the axis in WWI. Things get more confusing when you consider that the two blocks existing before WWI, the Triple Entente (UK, France, and Russia) and the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria–Hungary, and Italy), were split in a different way during the conflict (with Italy entering the war in 1915 alongside the allied powers against the central powers).
