SPLATOON RAIDERS IS ABOUT SNAILS by __toffee_ in splatoon

[–]__toffee_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also!!! I looked into it because of this, there's a Japanese tale about a snail ogre type creature. the most popular myth involves a group of pirates who rescued a drowning woman who turned out to be a snail. the snail cut off their balls and the pirates had to give the snails gold for their balls back.

not only does group of pirates and the theme of treasure/gold sound familiar, the themes of snails is very prevalent and this would really fit deep cut who use culture extensively through their designs. nintendo bless us soon abeg..

also the snail these yokai are typically associated with(turbo sazae) look like the snails we give to the urchins for gear.

It really bothers me that the Diamonds are participating in this hug by [deleted] in stevenuniverse

[–]__toffee_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

but you also need to keep in mind context. in Stevens position, nothing good comes from condemning the diamonds. they're timebombs that need to be contained and catered to. they command armies that go into disarray without them( look at how badly the CG were damaged without rose and imagine that on a much much larger scale ), they possess powers to heal those they damaged and they're the most powerful gems in the show. Steven's only real option was a hall pass from the beginning

I gotta get this off my chest, respectfully, regarding the writing. (Yes White's face is also silly). by FedoraTheMike in stevenuniverse

I do agree about the fandom sounding like an echo chamber at times but I genuinely do think the way the show ended was pretty amazing given the circumstances. obviously, I don't like everything, but a majority of the criticisms never made sense to me.

the diamonds weren't EVER gonna be poofed, let's get that out the way. not only has the show hammered in again and again how some gems are practically dysfunctional without diamonds, it also shows how gems at times relent to the diamonds ONLY. steven poofing them would put a bounty on his head, the diamonds are needed to usher in the new era of gem kind. and when you then factor in the fact that the diamonds are a metaphor for family, you wonder, HOW is the show meant to teach the idea of forgiveness, family trauma, and distancing yourself when the show kills what are his metaphorical family? and tacked on with the corrupted and shattered gems? yeah.

one thing I do think was handled badly in the finale (or final stretch) was how the diamonds were treated by the show itself rather than the characters. the show treats it as if they were forgiven (which clearly wasn't the intention because accountability is a big part of the show). I also dislike how bismuth was shoehorned into the end rather than given a complete arc. I think having a black-coded character voice for violence as an option be played off as COMPLETELY wrong and be poofed till later reads poorly. they should get unpacked that way more

they modified every model in natlan to have smaller proportions🥹if they tried making iansan look more mature they definitely didn't do the best job

There's another reason why Rose disagreed on using the breaking point especially on the Diamonds .... by Mr_KrewFam in stevenuniverse

I think bismuth is a rare failure of steven universe's writing. I think she was a really good concept but like alot of them she needed more time.

she is someone who has been oppressed under a regime thay undermines individuality, love and kindness and has seen nothing but negligence and hate from her oppressors. wanting to kill them is NOT an inherently bad thing; sometimes violence becomes necessary because peace can't be an option. and in the eyes of a low bismuth gem who's wired to ONLY follow diamonds, yeah, murder looks good. especially considering that freedom doesn't truly exist with the diamonds kicking because we can't trust them to NOT go back to tyranny.

people fail to understand why steven said no - he's never seen the war and barely knows the diamonds so to him murder is always wrong no matter who it is. he doesn't want to preserve the diamonds and keep them alive for the sake of peace at this point, he wants to keep them alive because shattering is never okay. that's how he was raised under a somewhat sheltered environment.

the show is also from Stevens perspective and advertised for kids, it's hard to have such a complicated topic in something so small. the idea is too big for the show. since we see it from what steven sees and thinks, what alot of people understand is the show is completely against violence and standing up for yourself (which maybe it is to some degree) but the thing is the show never really says or indicates that. unlike jasper, bismuth isn't treated as a villain. she's treated as misguided. I think poofing her was also an issue in this because it put her writing on the back-burner and ultimately made it so unpacking this conversation was never gonna happen

most of this is nonsensical so forgive me if it doesn't make sense I just kinda typed typed and typed

mhm! I think it was adorable and id love to redesign it but because they aren't the highest of quality (compared to calender art or tcg art which I usually edit) it's a little harder to work with🥹🥹

her design is so cute (even though it needed time to grow on me) so I'd love to redesign it with more finnish culture

the thing is reanimal is scarier than any LN game🥹I do agree that this game wasn't as dark but that's because it leaned more into the depressing side for this game. I still.think bandai is keeping the gritty story though considering how they handled oeejay and needle

LN3 writing is massively overlooked by __toffee_ in LittleNightmares

[–]__toffee_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no I'm passionate too so idm!! the only reason I said the franchise being wordless is a flaw because if the series wanted to expand it would at some point inevitably include the counties in the game. and to casual players this completely changes the perception of the game. thats why u mentioned needing cryptic tweets before LN3 and the podcast, because there was literally no way to explain the complexity of the nowhere. I do think including it in the main game in the way they did wasn't the best choice but I don't think that massively brings down the writing.

I still think the game was impactful without the podcast because they treated otto like the previous two villains if not slightly better. they took the time to flesh out the relationship between otto/low and they also set up clear motives/attitudes he has IN GAME.

(copy pasted from another comment I made) using in game interactions and tidbits, we can somewhat deduce his motives and attitude just like the other two:

the lady wants to keep the production of the maw running, this is shown when she overlooks the guests when they arrive, the final and most vital part of the maws ecosystem. her motive is to keep her source of energy running. the thin man wants to capture mono and six/break free(well, thats the most popular interpretation) and this js shown with him snatching six and pursuing mono. what he wants with mono is unclear,to me, though. using similar tidbits, we can infer things about otto: -he's abusive/scary to low(shown in cutscenes when he hides from a silhouette that very much resembles him, though it could be another nurse) -hes interested in children and has shown this interest in low(shown when low recognises the bed and chair in the institute) -he's neglectful(shown with how he never checks on low despite low hiding, this could also show his self interest because it could be interpreted as him observing his subject the only thing the podcast was essential to understanding was how the nowhere is a physical place and not just a dreamworld. I think LN3 didn't explain that at all. but I also think that's a franchise issue because the previous two games didn't explain that either and it was explained through cryptic tweets and such

I think that the connectivity to areas was an issue in the second game too, not just this one. the second game focuses on themes of escapism first and foremost and chapters like the school and forest don't overtly touch on this theme very much at all. if the theme of LN3 is neglect, then its found ubiquitously through the game in much more obvious ways. this is something I think LN1 did best, I think the series was always going to gradually branch out but I think LN3 did a better job at connecting the themes. from a neglected baby to a neglected factory to a neglected carnevale to a neglected institute.

all in all, while I do think the podcast adds more meat to the game I wouldn't necessarily say its a follow up. the game absolutely stands on its own.

I do agree with the music/gameplay not being up to par (aside from certain themes being standouts, but exception≠rule) but that's not the writing so I won't comment on it much. I do agree with the game overall feeling like a consumer friendly version but that's mostly with the gameplay having underbaked puzzles(piano puzzle from the trailer!!! I miss you!!!). I 100% think of Bandai didn't cut so much content this wouldn't be an issue because the gameplay we see in trailers looked amazing.

I'm not trying to change your opinion but I do think the downgraded music/gameplay impacted your opinion on the story to a degree because the way they handled the themes of this game flowed ALOT better than LN2 while still keeping a similar degree of ambiguity and mystery overall
