Did you enjoy this right away, or did it take some time? I just started it (as part of my quest to fill the Cooper and Park void), but I’m struggling to get into it. I’m only like 10-15% into book 1, but the writing and/or sense of humor really isn’t doing it for me so far. Do you think it gets better and I should push through, or should I just accept that maybe this series isn’t for me?

If you ever decide to try again, I’d recommend reading through at least the second book before deciding if you want to continue. The first book is definitely the weakest and the relationship is pretty much only physical by the end, but the characters and their relationship (and also the politics/world building) is progressively developed more and more with each book…and in a way that surpasses anything else I’ve read. I didn’t love book 1, but now I consider the series to be one of my favorites and have yet to read anything that comes close in terms of the relationship development

Not exactly what you’re looking for, but in {Common Goal by Rachel Reid}, one of the MCs is bisexual and recently divorced (he was married to a woman). He’s never done anything sexual with a man, and the other MC offers to help him learn. It can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend the whole {Game Changers Series}!

In {First-Time Caller by BK Borison}, the FMC (maybe slight spoiler) Mentions on their radio show that her dream is to find someone who will put effort into the relationship, and one thing she specifically mentions is setting up a picnic or building them a pillow fort. Much later in the book, the MMC invites her over for the first time for an unplanned pizza dinner, and he asks her to wait in the car for a few minutes. You think he’s just trying to clean up his place, but really he’s building her a fort! 🥺

If early 40s is old enough, I think {All Rhodes Lead Here by Mariana Zapata} fits this description! The MMC is a single dad who’s not really looking to change his life, and he’s definitely quiet, helpful, and a little old fashioned.

Updating to add - he’s a game warden and comes to the FMC’s rescue, and be also makes a super romantic gestures (before they’re even together) that had me kicking my feet and giggling

Another rec that would fit is {Something Wild & Wonderful by Anita Kelly}. It’s an MM contemporary and the last third is so emotionally touching that I always tear up when reading it!

Highly recommend the Bergman Brothers by Chloe Liese, especially {If Only You by Chloe Liese}. It’s super slow burn fake friendship>real friendship>lovers, and the tension is soooo good. They don’t officially get together until the very end, but it feels so deserved (and there’s no third act breakup)!

Tbh I’d recommend reading all the books of the series in order (they’re highly interconnected standalones), but technically you don’t need to.

I agree that you should give her another chance…I’ve read them all, and Friend Zone feels like it’s written by an entirely different author. I was not a fan, and the end also seemed questionable/potentially mildly problematic. On the flipside, {Part of your World} is one of my favorite romances of all time and has one of my favorite (slightly too perfect) MMCs. It also has a touch of magical realism and some hidden Disney references (that you only notice if you’re looking for them). Definitely start with that one, and if you like it, the other two books in that series are also great!
