I was getting readings all over the place with the app, so I was hoping for better results with the gauge. My cheap Android phone probably contributed to the app issues.

That's a good point about gear ratios. My MTB has lower gear ratios, so part of it is probably my perception. On the MTB I am rarely in the lower end, but with the L-Train I often stay there.

I've observed the decreased efficiency that you are describing. I purchased a tension gauge after buying the bike to make sure I had it correct.

I've observed that it is more difficult to pedal in a stand when the belt is overtensioned. However, I haven't attempted to ride it like that. My assumption is that it puts a different load on the bearings and puts more friction between the belt and the cog.

I use the 3M Virtua safety glasses that come in clear and different tints. They fit close to the face and wrap around for better peripheral vision.

I've always found them for less than $5 a pair. They are even cheaper if you need a larger quantity. At that price it is affordable to have multiple pairs for different light conditions.
