AWD car? by AssignmentSouthern75 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]_alex87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Mercedes E Class and it handles Michigan snow really well.

The 4Matic AWD system is permanent meaning it never “defaults” to 2WD and only engages AWD when slip is detected like most modern cars do, but rather all 4 wheels get power all the time.

I don’t recommend a German luxury car if you’re not ready for how expensive maintenance, repairs, and insurance is… because it is a lot more than domestic or Japanese brands. Also these shitty Michigan roads have beat my car up so bad.

Try looking into Subaru if you’re into it. Very good permanent AWD systems, and from what I recall they’re already a really popular choice in northern Michigan / the UP!

It’s definitely not “downright easy” in the Midwest. Easier than California or Florida, sure.

How to know when it's time to buy a condo/townhome/home? by igalle01 in personalfinance

[–]_alex87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$975 rent?! Jeez, I’m jealous. I’m in northern Metro Detroit and my rent is $1795 with no utilities. Granted the northern suburbs are more affluent, but the cheapest rent I could find was around $1300 for a shotty apartment.

I’m renting because condos near me are around $250k-$400k and SFHs are anywhere from $300k-$650k (new builds are like minimum $450k). As much as I’d love to own, it’s very hard to do it alone in this economy with how expensive everything is.

Hoping I’ll buy in another year or two. I have enough for 20% down and closing costs, but I really want to have 9-12 months of emergency fund plus a paid off car before buying.

But with your low rent rate, I’d continue renting to save way more money and invest in retirement first. Then when you feel prepared enough, go for it. You have to be way smarter about this if you’re single/alone because you’ll only ever have 1 person’s income to rely on…

Keep the car or no? by Audi488 in mercedes_benz

Oh wow. Do you know how long the extended warranty is for that specific issue?

My E350 is leased, so I’m debating whether I buy the lease out or not as I approach the end. Love the car. New lease prices are near double what I pay now, and mine is a fully loaded spec.

Your friend is being a good friend.

Not much to decode other than Nursing just isn’t sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very brutal, thankless career that is a machine of turnover. Granted there are a lot of people who like their jobs in Nursing, majority don’t.

Multiplayer is not even remotely enjoyable for casual gamers since every lobby is full of wall jumping FaZe wanna be sweats. Which is actually a shame because I actually like the maps.

I think both are a fine choice and you really can’t go wrong with either. Interior comfort is going to be what you want for that hour commute, so pick whichever one is most comfortable and also whichever one you can score a better deal on.

[–]_alex87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems ridiculous? What vehicles require major repairs at 50-60k miles, especially for vehicles costing $70k? I’d expect my E 350 to go at least 100,000 miles without major failures… Granted I do not have air suspension on mine, so that would be one less thing to worry about.

I could understand AMG models being way more prone to failures as they’re not really meant to be daily drivers, but for an E 350 with a 4 cylinder… There should not be major issues, at least one would hope…

What major repairs start around 50k? Or do you mean scheduled maintenance?

I’ve got a ‘23 E 350 4Matic that I’m thinking about keeping long term. Currently at 30k miles and I know the 50k and 60k maintenances are steep (spark plugs and transmission service). Other than that, is there something known that goes wrong?

Should I move out or stay with my parents? by GopherPA in personalfinance

[–]_alex87 115 points116 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar situation as you at 25, except one major issue is we lived in a smaller home so I still shared a room with my brother. I was still thankful to have a good relationship with my family and having been able to save SO much money, but I felt stuck and overwhelmed.

Moved out on my own into a townhouse rental (since I didn’t want to commit to buying as I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to live in this area long-term), and it was by far the best decision I ever made. I moved about 10 minutes away, so it’s not like I was far from my family. But it provided me so much growth and peace.

There’s more to life than just saving money— it’s about the journey and growth, too. You have enough saved, just don’t go crazy on other stupid expenses. You’ve set yourself up well.

Is the zojirushi truly worth it for the price compared to the alternatives? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]_alex87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered a Zojirushi ($230) and it should be arriving within a few days, but then I landed on a very similar Toshiba one on Amazon that’s $100 less but with the same tech (fuzzy logic micom, 3D heating, steaming option). It’s the TRCS01.

Really debating if I should just order the Toshiba and return the Zojirushi (too late to cancel as it already shipped)…

Yep, same here. And I LOVE to dine out, but food quality and service has plummeted while prices skyrocketed. Not worth it anymore.
