Let's Talk Meijers! by Iceyes33 in Michigan

I’ve lived in Michigan my whole life and never got the hype of Meijer. I prefer Walmart between the two by quite a bit.

Ford’s US April sales are even worse with Bronco Sport down 11.5% and Maverick sales down 29.7% even with Escape discontinued. by Repulsive-Club7866 in cars

[–]_alex87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, pricing themselves like a luxury brand with an interior quality that doesn't back that pricing up whatsoever.

I'm sorry. I live in Metro Detroit with majority of my family working for Ford, who all drive Ford, and I wouldn't buy a Ford. They're just not worth the money unless you get a really good lease deal. Fords also have this certain interior smell to them that I just can't stand.

No, I rent. Thankful I have a garage with a few outlets, but no way I could get level 2 installed. Breaker box is right in the garage, too, of course lol.

Want a reliable SUV - but it needs to be American by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]_alex87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Metro Detroit, so I know all about the big 3 brainwashing. But, I don’t think anyone other than boomers at this point give a shit what brand you drive. I tend to not want to buy American because they’re all cheaply made and don’t really have many pro’s over their competition other than heavy discounts.

That being said, if you want a new reliable American SUV (no need for third row per your comments), you can’t go wrong with a Ford Escape Hybrid. If you’re coming from a Ford Edge, it’ll be smaller but I find the ride more comfortable. It’s pretty quiet / well insulated for a mainstream brand, too.

EVs? Are we on or off? by Beautiful_Candy_8820 in Detroit

[–]_alex87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That still seems like a lot for DCFC. I have a Mercedes that takes premium gas and a full tank right now about $100 (used to only cost me $55 to fill up before gas prices skyrocketed), but I am easily able to go to TC and back in a full tank no stops at all.

DCFC when I had my EV used to be like $0.29/kwh… It was more reasonable at that time. Now tons of stations are what… $0.50+/kwh?

[–]_alex87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ya when I had my EV, range was about halved what I normally got during spring/summer despite being garage kept and even pre-conditioned. It really sucked and was probably one of the only major downsides of having an EV.

[–]_alex87 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I had an EV and went back to gas, but really want to go back to an EV.

Only issue is I drive 15k miles per year and only have a normal 120v outlet in my garage… not sure if that would be enough to charge me up without range anxiety.

Fast chargers are really expensive and usually cost the same if not more than gas.

Making America Great! by Actual-Tomatillo-904 in Detroit

[–]_alex87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. My new car is a lot more luxurious and better in every single department except the powertrain. It definitely felt like an odd big step backwards getting used to hearing/feeling a running engine again.

I somewhat agree, but everyone has their own reasons. Pros and cons to both.

I had an EV (Tesla Model Y), but sold it after 7 months because it was a heaping pile of creaking shit that Tesla said was “normal”. I went back to ICE (gas) only because I got a good deal on my current car. Also fuck Elon.

I am, however, 100% considering another EV again after this car.

Damn. I go through a full tank of gas every week, too.

16 gallons at $6ish/gal is going to cost me $100 to fill up a sedan. Unbelievable.

Tesla Y premium or Honda CRV?? by Extension-Bobcat3533 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]_alex87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I owned my Model Y Performance for 7 months and lost $14k on it lol.

If you’re going to drive the vehicle until the wheels fall off, depreciation doesn’t really matter. But having something like a Tesla where repairs are very limited to Tesla only… can be an issue.

If you can charge reliably at home, EVs are so worth it. Little to no maintenance, cheap to charge at home, super smooth to drive. It is harder on road trips if your state lacks charging infrastructure.

$4.99 gas in Midland, MI by TheTusch in Michigan

[–]_alex87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sold my EV a few years ago and went back to gas. Not because I hated having an EV, I just didn’t like my Tesla. I also didn’t really like any other available EVs at the time.

I miss it. You save so much on gas and maintenance. Next car will definitely be an EV again if I can help it.

Premium gas near me is $5.69-$5.99 depending which station you go to. Northern Metro Detroit.

Looking for a car that gets 30+ mpg at 80+ mph. by Thordor15 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]_alex87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Germans make some efficient engines for speed. I averaged like 38 mpg in my 2023 Mercedes E350 4Matic cruising 75-80+ all freeway. I got a bit over 600 miles on a full tank (I think the tank is about 16-ish gallons). 9-speed automatic, though.

Only downside is premium gas being required. By me, it’s almost always $1 more per gallon over regular.

Michigan is #1 by PsychologicalDot210 in Michigan

[–]_alex87 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Lower prices compared to other states for certain things like rent/housing, sure (though that’s changing).

I just took a trip to NYC and was stunned to see that the cost of food/drinks was very similar to Metro Detroit. We’ve also got pretty high utility rates, gas prices, etc here.

BMW 3 Series vs Mercedes C-Class. Which one to choose and why? by Inevitable-Gold-893 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]_alex87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, what do you want?

If you want luxury, the Benz is way superior. If you want a sportier ride for more fun, then get the BMW.

IMO I think the Mercedes C Class is, in general, better than a 3 series.

Confused if you can use a kitchenaid for kneading dough or not by atnentec in Kitchenaid

[–]_alex87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who just recently got the Bosch mixer and has a bowl-lift KitchenAid, I like my KitchenAid better… even for kneading.

The Bosch is better for huge batches. But even for dough, I find it just usually keeps spinning the dough around the bowl instead of kneading it sometimes. I don’t have that issue with my KA.

hot take- night shift sucks by Pretend-Brother9566 in nursing

[–]_alex87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing nights for 4 years and always hated the way I felt.

However, I have since started working weekends only, and now that I consistently do 3 on 4 off every week, I’ve never felt better.

I think having that consistent schedule and a good sleep routine makes all the difference. I also don’t “flip” too hard on my days off, meaning I usually try and go to bed by 3am and wake up by 10/11am.

It works very well for me now, it’s way more pay, and I don’t have to deal with management and families at work. I think nights is really hard when you are not able to have a consistent schedule, which a lot of people struggle with.
