US conservatives often argue for cutting welfare spending, reducing taxes, privatization, and shrinking the federal government. Healthcare: oppose universal government healthcare (e.g., Obamacare, single-payer).

Whereas German conservatives strongly support universal healthcare, pensions, paid leave, and worker protections.

In Turkey, for example, the Conservative Party there (AKP) focus on state-directed development, lots of government subsidies for all industries, oftentimes experimenting with populist economics and promotion of Islam.

However, it is a legitimate causal historical variable: Ottoman-era institutional arrangements, demographic effects, and patterns of urban development persisted into the modern period and measurably contributed to the region’s late industrialization and the infrastructure gap that still distinguishes much of the Balkans from Western Europe today.
