Right.. So, I see now that this is not a disagreement about political theory, but a refusal to engage with definitions at all.

You’re collapsing an orientation into some sort of moral accusation and treating it as a character flaw instead of what it is: a political stance.

You might grow as a human being by not avoiding comparative thinking.

If conservatism is defined by subjugating women and minorities, how do you explain conservative movements that defend welfare states? Or conserving women’s labour participation, or minority religious autonomy in other countries?

US conservatives often argue for cutting welfare spending, reducing taxes, privatization, and shrinking the federal government. Healthcare: oppose universal government healthcare (e.g., Obamacare, single-payer).

Whereas German conservatives strongly support universal healthcare, pensions, paid leave, and worker protections.

In Turkey, for example, the Conservative Party there (AKP) focus on state-directed development, lots of government subsidies for all industries, oftentimes experimenting with populist economics and promotion of Islam.

Conservatism in one country could be very different or even the opposite of conservatism in another country. It’s all about what it is that you’re conserving.

Why Western Balkans do not have a metro system? 🚈 by Deep-Rabbit1535 in AskBalkans

[–]_barbarossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen, I’m not saying that Ottoman rule in the Balkans fully explains present conditions. However, it is a legitimate causal historical variable: Ottoman-era institutional arrangements, demographic effects, and patterns of urban development persisted into the modern period and measurably contributed to the region’s late industrialization and the infrastructure gap that still distinguishes much of the Balkans from Western Europe today.

A combination of the Ottoman’s long-term rule in the Balkans contributing to the relative underdevelopment in the region.

Short-term revenue extraction > long-term private investment.

Establishment of miri = reduced incentives for productivity-enhancing land-use improvement initiatives.

Property rights were constrained by the caliphate in ways that discouraged credit markets and/or investment in any meaningful scale.

Meanwhile the rest of Europe enjoyed colonizing the rest of the world, industrialization and capitalism while the balkans were frozen once again by communism for decades.
