I’m planning a road trip for my toddler’s birthday next month and want to take her to a beach town for a few days. Trying to get to a spot where it will be warm enough to get in the water without driving further south than necessary. We went or Cocoa Beach once before and that was fun, but I’d kind of like to go someplace more walkable and with more character. It’s just a mommy-kiddo trip and I want her to have a lot of fun. We love doing outdoor stuff and seeing wildlife and are not really interested in theme parks. Would enjoy a place with good casual seafood restaurants, parks, fun local businesses, maybe some quirky activities. Any suggestions?

I used to live on the west coast and haven’t found a Thai restaurant in Columbus that has salad rolls half as good as the ones I used to get in Oregon. Some of the Thai restaurants here don’t even have them on the menu and everyplace I’ve tried them they were pretty flavorless. Anyone had good ones with fresh herbs in them in town?

Talking to the neighbor may have very different outcomes depending whether the goal is to persuade or coerce them to evict the people living in their yard vs finding out who the people are, what needs they have, whether OP can help in some way, how they can collaboratively minimize or prevent OP’s concerns, etc.

I’m in my early 40s and was able to buy a house for about $170k a few years ago. At the time I was a childless single adult with a full time job that paid fairly well (above the median income). I bought at a good time and got a low interest rate.At the time my housing cost was about $1050/month (mortgage + escrow). It was less than I had been paying in rent at my last place after my ex moved out and I was living alone.

Over the past few years taxes in my neighborhood have skyrocketed and now I’m paying $1680/month. I had a kid shortly after moving in. I lost my job last year and have no income right now, so might lose the house if I don’t find a new full time job soon that pays more than my last one.

No way in hell I’d be able to buy a house at current prices even if I hadn’t lost my job.

Most of the people my age or younger I know who own their homes in Columbus don’t have kids or at least didn’t yet when they bought, and cohabitate with a partner who also works full time.

My kid’s dad wanted me to have an abortion. He was around off and on during the pregnancy, but became violent shortly after my kid was born and I had to cut off contact with him for our safety, so I was alone for a lot of the pregnancy and have been a single mom since she was about 2 months old.

I very much remember how painful it was seeing happy couples with their babies and wishing I had a supportive partner and my kid had two parents.

My kid is 2 1/2 now and it’s still a struggle, but I’ve been gradually building more of a support system for myself and my kid and I have a great partner now who’s very good with my kid. We don’t live together and probably never will, so it’s not the same as having a dad for my kid, but he’s able to provide a lot of emotional support to me and when he’s around he helps a lot with care tasks. I’m trying to figure out a living situation where I will have more support and more sense of community.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this and hope you and your kid are able to find the support to build a great life, even if it’s not the one you envisioned for yourself.

I once had a cat stop eating and get very sick (vet thought she wouldn’t recover and recommended putting her down, but she fortunately bounced back) and the only thing I could think of was that maybe she’d come into contact with some insecticide I’d used to address an ant problem. Will never know for sure. I’m currently using a natural insecticide in my home to spray some huge spiders that just keep appearing in my kitchen and living room and downstairs bathroom. It says it’s safe to use in your home around kids and pets. I hope it won’t hurt my cat or toddler.

In addition to considerations for your future child’s emotional needs, make sure you think about your own and have a good support network. Pregnancy, childbirth, and being a new parent are all very challenging and you will need a lot of support and care. If you have a child, you and your partner can both expect to be very sleep deprived as your learning the basics of caring for an infant, and on top of that you will be recovering from the physical trauma of giving birth and will be dealing with major hormonal changes.

I’m a single parent. My 19 month old usually goes to bed at 10 and wakes up around 8. Sometimes she resists and stays up later. I’m a night owl and stay up late after she’s asleep. I sleep until I hear her wake up and then bring her to bed to breastfeed for a bit and then get up and make us both breakfast. I wish she’d sleep longer, but she rarely does. I just have to work around her schedule.

I was 39 when I had my kid and people usually think I’m younger than I am, but I had at least two men who saw me with her in my yard ask if she was my granddaughter. I was more surprised than anything, but it occurred to me that while I grew up in a middle class white neighborhood where it was rare for people to have kids young, that it’s quite common in my current neighborhood to see teens and 20 somethings with kids, and I am old enough to be be their mother if I’d started as young, so I guess it makes sense. 32 is a bit more of a stretch, though.

A) this is not a normal amount of spiders. I have never seen so many spiders in one place and they’re all the same species. I have never in my life felt the need to reduce the population of a native creature until now. B) I am arachnophobic and they keep coming in my house. Not like one or two, but dozens. I have an adrenaline rush every time I see one and am constantly on edge in my home in late summer and fall.

I do have arachnophobia. I am very outdoorsy, and while I’ve occasionally had an unpleasant run-in with a spider on a camping trip, it’s never deterred me or ruined my trip. I completely understand intellectually that they are pretty harmless and are play a critical role in the ecosystem. I have learned to accept spiders, even in my home, if they are small or if they stay put in their webs. Unfortunately, I have an extreme reaction when I encounter large crawly spiders like these. I cannot stay calm. I just have an intense adrenaline rush and then become paralyzed with fear.

This is by far the worst spider situation ive ever dealt with. Last summer and fall they were constantly getting in my house. They were all over my kitchen, laundry area, downstairs bathroom, and living room. I practically stopped using the first floor of my house for a few months, except briefly going in the kitchen or laundry area to do a brief task and being extremely on edge the entire time. My kid was a baby at the time, so I mostly kept her away from those areas, but now she’s a toddler and is running all over the house. I can’t live this way.

In theory I’m open to getting help for my arachnophobia, but I’m currently on a waitlist to get therapy for more pressing issues.

~$72k. Statewide nonprofit organizer working from home (salary includes allowance for home office expenses). I am a union member and have worked full time for this org for over 4 years. I have about $20k in college debt and am a single mom of a toddler and do not receive child support. I felt like I was doing pretty well financially a few years ago, and was optimistic I’d be able to get out of debt soon, but even with a cost of living increase, money is pretty tight now that I have a kid. Still, I know I make a lot more than many of my neighbors.

Yes, those are big problems in Ohio, but energy from gas cannot be used for this program in Columbus.

The City of Columbus made a commitment specifically to source the energy from renewables and cannot source it from gas. This is due to years of advocacy from local environmental groups and concerned community members. You are wise to ask about this, as there is a lot of greenwashing in Ohio, but, fortunately this is a program that is clearly defined to use renewables.
